Wizard's Taking Damage from Casting
Hello, this may be a silly question, but I can't seem to find any answers about this and hope that someone around here can help me. I played TW:W 1 and got used to the way things worked there, and while II is obviously an improvement in several ways, there's something I've noticed that is confusing me.

When my wizards in my Empire ME campaign are casting spells, even without overcasting, they'll often take damage. What's going on here? Are certain spells/lores more likely to cause this? Is there any way to mitigate it? I often find that my casters are near dead by the end of a battle, even though I keep them out of harm's way.

I'm using SFO, in case that bears on the subject.

They could be taking random archer/catapult fire. That would be my only guess. I'm not sure if some spells drain life though.

I believe SFO buffs magic in general but adds a miscast chance to regular casting. Thats what is doing it.

SFO imo has atrocious balancing, which turned me off using it. Everything else about it was pretty neat however.

Thanks for the answers, guys! Maschinengewehr, I think you must be right. That explains it. I wonder if I can find a submod that removes that feature, as I love SFO, but I can't say I'm fond of this element.

Thanks again!

What is SFO? My life mage takes massive damage every time I cast spells. Most battle, she is almost dead even when she is no where near enemy missile fire and hidden in forest.

Some lords also greatly increase the chance of enemy miscast as well.

SFO is a overhaul mod.

Do you overcast spells (double click them)? Overcasting often (or perhaps always?) adds a miscast chance to spells in the vanilla game (if a spellcaster miscasts a spell he/she takes damage). If so i advice you to not overcast as much and perhaps consider spending perk points into reducing miscast chance. Unless i'm mistaken there is also spells with a miscast chance even without overcasting.

Just went in game to check. The "Soul Stealer" spell comes with a 100% miscast chance in the vanilla game (There is no overcast version of mentioned spell).

Note that its a life steal spell, so it tends to heal up the amount you damage yourself and you can always reduce the miscast chance through items and skills.

Not sure if there are other spells that can miscast on the basic version, but there are at least that one.

There's other ways. Skaven lords for example have a skill that gives like 5% miscast and +13 winds of magic or something along those lines. I think its like warpstone tokes. Idk how many LLs have it.

And then there's also spells like soul stealer, which doesn't have an overcast version but has a miscast chance default. Although that's kind of just like it being an overcast only spell.

When you overcast a spell, it has a chance to miscast which damages your wizard

This is why I don't play SFO :-)

Don't forget. Some heroes/lords add a global miscast chance to the enemy. Arch lector/warrior priest gives 50%. Wurrzag gives 100% miscast. Others are there, just dont know out of heart.
Items give miscast to the enemy wizards. Some enemies when they attack apply a miscast chance.

As I've understood it, it's the miscast that actually deals the damage (to enemy) on that spell. Or it might have been something completely else and I'm dumb.

There are items and skills to reduce miscast %. Check your mage skills.
