Also it coincides with their architecture. They are all about sleek spire like buildings. So in line with the whole graceful aesthetic .
Dark Elves are the same but they like it ONLY in black and with spikes.
Lorewise I wouldn't know as the only thing I know is if it's an elf...it should be dead.

I think they're supposed to be somewhat inspired by Phrygian helmets and have a bit of a Greek feel to them but in an over the top way as per WH rules: http://kultofathena.com/images/ATP03_l.jpg
