Admittedly I find they have some very rough starting islands, what's your strategy on hard to get them optimized?

Yes the biggest weakness for Heat sinkers is their earlygame, for me I use Kai Miller with the Dispersal mech so it can clear some mobs solo and I put Quick-fire and Napalm together as a duo. Try to get the range up on Dispersal mech as fast as possible and DON'T ADD PUSH TO QUICK-FIRE imo it's harder to play but might not be for you. Early game you might have to take some damage with the mech sometime but I think once you cleared first island it's actually good squad and last one is start with the forest island one it's the easiest for this squad

I found replacing the weapon on the prime is usually a huge improvement. The one it comes with is pretty awful, dealing less damage than some starting prime weapons when fully upgraded and having a big area of effects that looks good on paper but is often hard to position without pushing something into a building or otherwise ruining your day. However the team's ability to apply boost to all of their mechs fairly often means that prime weapons that were already good become phenomenal in their hands.

I find them to be the hardest to work with at the start of the game. They lack great ways to move enemies on the first island and they don't do much damage. I haven't used them a ton, but they seem like worst of the new squads.

But maybe my brain hasn't wrapped itself around how to approach this team. Bomber, Mist, and Arach all seem to be much easier to get a 4 island hard win. Of maybe they just clicked with me.

I think that I like the Arach mechs the most.

To be clear, I'm not making a definitive statements or tier list, they could be awesome, I'm just having trouble seeing it.

I agree with Andrew they seem like the weakest new squad to me. I feel like Cataclysm is extremely strong and mist eaters are really fun with prospero because every mech has flying. Perhaps I'm underestimating boost

Also feels like the weakest / hardest new squad for me. I've gotten my 2 island victory (hard) and all their achievements, but... I spent yesterday just trying to get another win for them and I ended up wanting to uninstall the game instead. I haven't, yet, but I don't feel like playing anymore after that...

Cataclysm feels like the strongest squad, though most of the squads are fun.

They have a rough very start but that's. It's insane how much positioning power they have, and positioning is what wins this game. Absolutely get the push on the quick-fire mech. The difference between a mech that can push and one that can't is night and day.
The one issue I have is that the dispersal mech's weapon can't push and damage the same target. It really, really, really feels like the ending tile of it's burst should shove.
Heat Seekers are terrible. Easily the worst new squad. If you need a special pilot or an RNG weapon to make a team playable, they are not balanced.

lol, no.
they're super strong, and really fun to play. already bit the game on unfair with all island lengths with them. my favorite squad so far.

Just played them and I feel their biggest problem is positioning. I'm pretty happy with their damage performance once upgraded, but positioning is so miserable when it involves units that you must protect but not in your control. They do especially badly at island 3 where you need to protect bots that are not under your control, suddenly the only way you can push them away safely is the prime weapon, which is not that good at this since its damage area is at the centre, often you need to sacrifice grid to push them aside. Without additional weapon, any other positioning skill would kill the unit you need to protect. The prime weapon feels extremely awkward to use to me in terms of positioning. The combination of the other two are pretty good though.
In a way I feel like they are the mirror opposite of bombermechs which has insane positioning ability but pathetic damage output for most of the game. Although I was able to perfect with bombermechs, I failed at island 3 with heatsink. Hopefully the next run I get a early prime weapon replacement.

You can find new weapons/abilities in pods that fall on the battlefield. The pod must be collected or left undamaged at the end of the battle.

After you complete an island, the store opens and some new weapons are available to buy using reputation points.

Finding the weapons you need is a matter of luck.
I know this squad is good and they get nuttier with full upgrades, but I cannot for the love of God get past Island 2/3 with them on Hard mode. They do so little damage at the start and nearly all the psions ♥♥♥♥ them over even harder. Not to mention I feel like I get so much more unwinnable RNG when I play them.

I suggest complementing their weaponry by either getting or buying something
either tanks, a laser weapon, wind turbine or something else.
Boosted (from fire) works great with lasers because it increases the *minimum* damage from 1 to 2.

OK beat the game with heat sinker using the pilot OP suggested, and she indeed greatly boosted the reliability of the prime, especially in early game.
The path of upgrade I took this time is as such:
Napalm max -> quick shot damage (no push) -> prime max
I find quick shot to be better off without that push as well, generally without push you can hit a vek in front of a building as well as another one at the field. After applying the push, a lot of the time I have to skip some shots. The napalm mech push is enough for most of the time.
