Unable to properly shut down computer and open applications after quiting game.
First of just want to say I'm directly using the Ubisoft connect application so Steam is not at fault.

After playing for a while and clicking the "Exit to desktop" button, the Ubisoft Connect application tends to act as though the game is still running and I cant press the launch button to start it up again.

As usual if something like this were to happen I would just close the application but in doing so it will freeze my computer requiring me to force shutdown using the physical button on my computer.

Now after having this happen before I attempted to shut down my computer with the Ubisoft Connect application still up but clicking the "Shutdown" and "Restart" buttons wont even work, resulting with me having to physically force shutdown my computer.

I also can't open certain applications such as GeForce and opening the Windows settings application will not load.

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated as I dont want to keep on force shutting down my computer and risk possibly damaging files.

So far after updating windows I haven't encountered the issue but I will follow your advice and move the Ubisoft launcher to my SSD.

Since you are having trouble with other applications as well I would say it is a system issue. Whether it is hardware or software related you will need to do some troubleshooting to figure it out.

With that said, since it could be a broad range of things. I would recommend you asking someone or a friend who knows how to fix computers. This way they are hands on with the system. It literally could be anything and will be hard to help you on a forum.

Or you can simply do a clean install of windows to refresh the entire OS and file structure. Since you can't even open windows settings that would be my first go to.

Good Luck!

The issue only arises occasionally after playing and quitting AC:Origins on Ubisoft connect. Before opening the game everything works fine. When the issue did occur I looked at the task manager to see that my CPU was running at 100% while normally it runs at 7% - 13% with Chrome, Steam, and Ubi Connect open.

My running theory is that my computer is being bogged down due to the game not shutting down properly and treating is as the game is still up. The issue with that is I can't find AC:Origins on the task manager.

Another speculation is that I have Ubi: connect on my D: drive (HDD) and I downloaded AC:Origins on my C: drive (SSD) and for some unknown reason Ubi: connect does not like it and can't properly shut down the game.
This really shouldn't be an issue but I'm grasping at anything to figure out whats wrong.

Also I did verify my game files and they were all successfully verified.

Next time Ubi: connect does this again I'm going to see if closing the application through task manager can be used as a work around.

I did just check If there are any pending updates for my computer (OS, graphics) and there is one pending (for OS) so I'm going to see if that fixes it.

Disable all non essential programs, services, and tasks from starting with windows. This is what is called a clean boot. This will free up CPU resources. Do not do it by ending the tasks via task manager.

You also should have Ubisoft connect and games installed in same directory. So put it on your SSD.

Lastly can you please post your specs?

Ok good. Hopefully that was the issue.

Heya Derpy! Thanks for keeping us updated on this issue. It's good to hear the issue seems to have been resolved with an update to Windows. Indeed, one of the steps in our troubleshooting guide[ubi.li] from the stickied thread is to make sure Windows is fully updated - Ubisoft Connect uses various Windows features to work correctly, and we base it around the latest Windows updates, so it's a valuable troubleshooting step!

Let us know if the issue comes back, as there's some other steps I can suggest as well.

@Ubi-Thrupney This is still an issue. I have a beast PC with all the latest updates. Ubisoft client fails to properly quit AC Origins. The game is no longer visible or in the task manager, but Ubisoft Connect and Steam show the game is still running. Force quitting Ubisoft Connect shows a warning that the game is still running. Proceeding with quitting Ubisoft Connect, Steam still thinks the game is running and I can hear PC fans chugging air as if something doing a lot of work. You can no longer turn off PC gracefully at this point and can only hold power button to force shut down.

I'm having the same issue. I notice that the process of AC:O is still running and it is even impossible to kill that task with task manager (which than also starts to hang).

I am having this issue which started with Ghost Recon: Wildlands, which made me stop playing that game earlier this year and now with Assassin's Creed: Origins I just had the same issue.

I play the game and after a session quit it. Then the game in the UBI application says it isn't shut down and when I force quit it, it does that then I exit UBI launcher but Windows 11 doesn't work anymore, meaning I can not open task manager (task manager opens but directly hangs up), trying to log out doesn't work, resetting the computer doesn't work, shutting it down doesn't work. I literally have to either press the manual reset button and hold it on the computer case to restart the PC or turn the computer off through also the power button and restart it after a shut down.

I am looking through the net to see similar issues and I've tried a few queries like:
-"windows 11 freezes" ubisoft
-"windows 11 freezes" closing game,
and more of similar ones, until I tried searching for:
-ubisoft game won't properly shut down,
and after that I found this thread.

This started appearing to my recollection and understanding after I had to allow BattleEye to run on the PC on Windows 11 which is problematic, you can google why. I believe, but am not 100% sure that before I didn't run BattleEye for a few games this issue did not happen but I could be wrong although as I've stated I did not used to have these issues earlier on this same PC nor on my old one.

========***=====***=====****=========

Okay I got an update which is rather a big one for me at least. I haven't had any freezing after my initial one yesterday. I have started running Ubisoft launcher the original not the beta version in Admin mode in Windows and now it works without crashing my games on exit and without freezing Windows up after that.

I will try it out with Wildlands in the coming weeks/months and hoping that it (Windows) won't freeze that dreadfully like before but from what I have gathered these things have helped me not freeze anymore.

I have been exiting the games from the main menu in game so 3 things I've done in total which I think the admin mode was the most important one which potentially has fixed my issue so if anyone is reading this and you have problems like I did, try what I have done and see if that will work for you.

====8====================
Edit 2.

Admin mode doesn't work after testing. Ubisoft games not being able to close off after a session and Ubisoft launcher freezes, can not be shut down and still bricks Windows.

Same issue here, nothing worked for me too

Same thing for me on a recent bought new PC with Windows 11, fully updated, so lack of updates definitely isn't an issue. Both Windows and gpu drivers are up to date.

The game doesn't only properly shut down. It completely massacres the system. Windows start menu is inaccessible. The PC cannot be shut down. I can't open the task manager at all. I can't open any apps and so on.

I saw some people suggesting to first quit to main menu and then to desktop - this doesn't always work. In fact, it doesn't seem to matter at all. From what I've observed, the problem tends to happen after longer gaming sessions and doesn't seem to happen after shorter ones. Or it might be completely random, I don't know. It would almost be fascinating if it wasn't so annoying.

One thing I was thinking could matter was - I'm using the explorer patch for Win 11 to make it look more like Win 10 (task bar and start menu) might this have something to do with it?

PS. I'm having the issue with Oddyssey but it's exactly the same thing OP described.
PS2. Both the launcher and the game are on the same (C) drive. So that doesn't fix it.

I just tried disconnecting my internet then started ubisoft in offline mod. Disabled cloud save sync also. Played 2and a half hours hours AC Odyssey and was able to quit the game without any problem. This is the only solution I could find. I hope it will also work for longer playtimes

Gonna play today with cloud saves disabled and will report back on the problem. Not sure if I can even open the launcher in the off line mode because I'm playing through game pass.

Tried killing the process through the task manager yesterday, and even that didn't work. Windows broke right after closing the process.

And yeah, after 2,5h it probably didn't break just naturally. It does seem to depend on the time the game is open. For the last couple days I played a couple hours in the morning and managed to always close it no problem. Then launching it in the afternoon it always broke after running for about 6-7 hour.

Might also try playing and closing the game without the win11 explorer patch just for sports and see if it changes anything.

Update after 2 days: Sadly no, launching as admin nor disabling cloud saves does not work. The only reliable "fix" is to simply close the game every 2-3 hours and relaunch it. The issue seems to be caused entirely by playing for too many hours in a row.
