This finally worked for me
Playing a game is meant to be fun and these anuses between valve and ubisoft have made it YOUR problem to solve. What kind of muppet is willing to pay for something and then literally have to work to get it running on THEIR OWN hardware?
Not me, refund and NEVER AGAIN.
Hey now, if you feel that strongly about this, you should probably go buy a console. I'm serious. I've been working with PCs since the 1980s and PC games have always had issues running, exponentially so on a Linux OS. Steam Deck is amazing and Proton is finally maturing but for you to flip out over having to deal with occasional workarounds is irrational at best.
Now Ubisoft has its own issues, but don't come on here pretending that Steam Deck is somehow not going to require some effort on your part to make occasional games work correctly on it. It is not a console, it is a Linux OS computer with a fancy shell on it.
My “support” was, talk to “ubisoft”, who OF COURSE don’t support the steam deck because they didn’t write it for linux so they tell me to talk to Steam.
This is not about me being an imbecile it’s about me not getting facts before paying or support after I paid money.
If you think that’s irrational you can work all you like to play a game you were told upfront is working and supported. That’s your deal, I don’t like that kind of business practice and my rational mind tells me to call it out.
Older Ubisoft games on steam store come bundled with the UPlay launcher. It appear this no longer works.
You can supersede this with the newer Ubisoft Connect launcher that does work by using the third party tool “protontricks”.
If you want to follow a guide search Youtube for “AC syndicate 5 minute fix”. I did that and starting AC Origins now runs the Ubisoft Connect launcher.
Let’s get one thing straight. IF this game was running when they did evaluate it, it certainly doesn’t now. The support I got was ZERO. Do you think they aren’t responsible for the content they are selling? You’re wrong. However you feel about doing work to make things run is irrelevant, that’s your business. Steam’s business is making sure they aren’t misinforming customers in order to make sales and then refusing to properly support them.
I’ve told them to re-evaluate the game and see if it’s still classified as supported. Now we’ll see what kind of integrity they have to provide correct information and if they honour their responsibility or not. My guess is they will ignore me and keep other paying customers who are posing the same issue all over the internet in the dark. If you think that’s adequate from a company taking money from you then more fool you.
I’m no idiot, I’ve solved problems much more complex than this, my point is clear, I shouldn’t have to, and you have misunderstood what that text means.
Btw...it's not Supported...it's Playable. If it were Supported then it would say Verified. Instead it's more of a swim at your own risk situation. But I understand you feel ripped off and entitled to more. Only Steam Support can help you.
The method I used was infinitely simpler than that, and was by the same video author. No need to install Connect as a non steam game and then navigate into the game folder to do anything, instead you simply use protontricks to install Connect directly into the game folder.
For Origins at least this worked for me.
We all have to be a little patient as things evolve -- again, that's why I suggested the console. It's not that I think you're unable to figure this out, but for you to get the level of support you are expecting, a console is the best solution. And frankly speaking, one of the reasons I own a PS5 along with multiple computer systems is that Ubisoft has been pretty toady about Steam and Valve in recent years. I like some of their games and I can get some to run and some simply won't get past the loading screen. (Valhalla, Far Cry Primal)
Steam Deck itself is pretty cool. It's still a Linux system and you're going to have to deal with workarounds frequently. Conversely, you'll have a unique experience that will expand your understanding of computing.
Sometimes instead of focusing on massive frustrations, we need to remember to take some time enjoying the journey. What you're able to easily do now with most Steam games was nearly impossible just a few years ago. Believe me, I tried. It's incredible that we are able to do all this now and break away from the Microsoft monopoly.
It appears to me that Steam support aren’t taking any responsibility though, I am certain I’m others will have had the same response as I did over this game, given the amount of people asking for help in various places and being advised varying solutions that weren’t working.
At the very least Steam support should acknowledge the game needs to be re-evaluated and be either proactive in finding solutions or crowd sourcing them so that they can direct people to a tried and tested workaround. Or even downgrade the status to Unsupported if broken by some update or other.
If a game isn’t marked as Unsupported, and has a rating of either Playable or Verified, then by definition it’s supported. While I appreciate the Steam Deck is a linux machine running compatibility layers, it’s Valves device, not just some random PC hardware, so there’s every opportunity to properly offer the support. I’ll grant it’s a maturing ecosystem, and yes it’s a great machine, I definitely don’t mind expanding my knowledge and applying work-arounds where needed, I just felt a bit cheated by the brush off I got from Steam support, after all, their information should be kept up to date. Looking at the history of people saying they can’t get the Uplay launcher to connect it’s clear this has been broken for quite some time, long enough for Steam support to have collected enough issues to warrant a re-evaluation I would assume. That’s what I took objection to ultimately.
Sorry for venting my frustration, I’ll know where to come for meaningful support next time, seems like there are quite a few experts willing to assist here which is great for everyone.
