I don't get shields.
I hold my shield up and the enemies just slice straight through it like it isn't there. Has been sine the start of the game. But when they have their shield up and I bash on them all day long and nothing gets through. So what is the point of using the shield?

Shields are so op in this game, the only way enemies could hit you is when they hit you from the sides or your back. Something's wrong there.

Yeah. I have like a +3 Melee Resistance shield equipped and I can stop arrows just fine but swords, clubs, hammers, and ♥♥♥♥ slice through my block like it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cake. I'm level 30 and I'm doing the Crocodile. In the arena they are Level 27-28-ish and some random spear dude just jump stabbed me and I died...

Attacks go through if their weapon goes red and sometimes orange, thus shield break attack. Some can be parried though. Larger weapons tend to shield break more often.

So they always do these red attacks? So I should only put my shield up at the last possible moment, like in Dark Souls? o_O

No, just block as normal and dodge if the enemy weapon is red or orange. That's usually when the enemy does a big windup attack.

If it's an enemy that's doing their own "Overpowered" attack that you see where their weapon turns reddish / orange just dodge. The way I deal with them is to use an OP attack of my own, or dodge, quick hit, or hold Y to charge my heavy attack and use that on them. Pair a dodge with a smoke bomb drop and that will take them out pretty easily.
