Also, the two modern characters suuuck. It's like the pulled them straight out of Mass Effect: Andromeda.
But really, if you liked the previous AC games, Origins is the biggest, the prettiest, and probably best playing. It's one of the worst written, but there's still a lot to like about this game.
So, if you're worried about too much modern day, do not worry. You can go through it relatively fast if you're not interested in it.

But, to have more than that, it would have to add value to the story, and it would help if they stuck with Layla now for the next game.
Looking back, I think Black Flag did a really good job of it, but I never completed that game so I dont know if that went a bit sour after a while. If they combined more of Laylas story with more depth like the Black Flag present day, that would be cool.
The explore-at-your-own-pace, though, is great, I just wish there would have been more of Layla. I'm really interested to see where her plot arc goes, particularly with her new Animus technology.
which game had modern day stuff you enjoyed and why/how did you enjoy it? not one of the assassin's creed games that i've played had good (let alone great) modern day sequences and i always felt that was intentional considering the fact that they've never been the focus.
Too short, badly written, not a lot of interesting background lore.
I've gone from failing to get engaged with the franchise to Origins becoming my favorite rpg, above Witcher 3. So Origins is doing a lot right imo and how they did the present day was part of that.
