this is highly subjective and everyone will have their own opinion.

personally when I first origins launched I was estatic and loved the game I still love origins just as much as I first did.

when i first got odyssey felt exact same way as I did about origins and still do, I love both games and im just anticipating when I can eventually afford the ac Valhalla game version I want

My summary of the two games:
Story: Origins > Odyssey
World design: Origins > Odyssey (subjective cuz I like ancient Egypt setting more)
Gameplay: Odyssey > Origins
World size/exploration: Odyssey > Origins (Odyssey is by far the largest AC game)

Origins is way better. I didn't really enjoy Odyssey.

I just spent all of yesterday exploring this very same question, reading forum posts, watching videos, etc. I decided to purchase Origins. I haven't played an AC game in many years, last one was Black Flag. Six hours into Origins and I am really enjoying it.

I played Odyssey first, and as a result I'd probably say I enjoyed that much more. I wasn't that impressed with the story line in Origins, and I found the game dynamics in Odyssey far more fun; ship-to-ship combat, bounty system, etc.

Odyssey has better graphics and gameplay. As to story content, depends on personal preference, since Origins is Ancient Egypt, whilst Odyssey is Ancient Greece.

Overall Odyssey is the upgraded Origins version.

Odyssey adds:
- ship combat (like AC Black Flag&Rogue)
- faction wars (fight on battlefields like spartan)
- many fortresses to take over
- skiltree system instead of "skills depending on equipped weapon type"
- better skills
- merc system overhaul, instead of ~10 named mercs these mercs are random generated and sometimes up to 3 will attack you
- 3 mythical beasts
- 3 big addons which take place in "the greek god world"

Both games lacks in story and have way to many sidequests which doesn't add anything to the overall plot and the stupid upgrade system is just a grind fest.

AC Valhalla is the upgraded Odyssey version which "removes" the sidequests and instead delivers about ~100 main quests which are all tied to the main plot. On top of that there are mini quests which are very local and could be done in <5 min. The "faction wars" are also tied into the main missions like castle sieges.

i prefer Origins.

comparing the two games geographically doesn't factor in which game is "better" because it comes down to preference.

saying Odyssey is "better" because its map is bigger or has more things to do because of it has nothing to do with the game itself and doesn't mean the game is in any way better or worse.

saying Odyssey is "better" because it offers more DLCs has nothing to do with how the game plays and is wrong to judge it on that merit.

saying Odyssey is "better" because it has skill tree is wrong because it's a completely new mechanic. just because it has something previous game doesn't doesn't make it better or worse, it just makes it different. every game brings something different to the table and it's what makes it unique, not "better".

saying Odyssey is "better" because it has better ship battles is wrong because Origins technically doesn't have ship battles. only time you do them are during Aya's very short naval voyages (3 in total if memory serves) which, geographically, are not even part of Origins' map.

speaking of ship battles in Odyssey they're a very nice callback to Black Flag because, essentially, they're almost the same, with few key differences being different types of ships and attacks. it feels familiar and enjoyable.

certain mechanics are done better in Origins, like Phylakes which there are only 10 of and don't respawn. just like elephants they're strong enemies that you feel accomplished taking down, unlike in Odyssey where Mercenaries are endless, reset each time you start the game and often times get in the way of doing quests, especially when fire blazers are lit and you get 4 of them in the fort at the same time. yes you can get better gear out of them (though kinda impossible fighting 4 at once...) but it's not needed. progressing through the story and exploring gets you the upgrades you need easily. plus they're so common they end up being a chore you wanna avoid to spare yourself few minutes rather than a mighty foe you feel accomplished beating.

just like Mercenaries the side quests you get from boards are also endless but unlike Mercenaries they don't interfere with your gameplay and you don't have to start them if you don't want to. they're a nice addition if you're in need of some extra XP to help you push through to the next level or just enjoy being in the world and wanting to kill some people.

there is one very noticeable key difference between how enemies in forts behave. in Odyssey if you kill one and carry the body to hide somewhere, within few seconds a random other enemy will leave its post and come replace the one you just killed. that's fine, happened in Origins, but what's not fine is after killing that second person and going to hide its body another person starts walking towards that same spot to replace it with previous person barely only hitting the floor. i did the Fishing Village just redoing the same spot over and over again, killing some 20 enemies there, on the same spot. it became so repetitive and boring that when the person with the bear took that spot i swear you could see a gleam in my eyes from something different happening. i never noticed it being so repetitive or nearly instantaneous that one would replace the other in Origins, but it was clear as day in Odyssey. don't think it even happened in smaller forts the size of Fishing Village in Origins, but the fact it does in Odyssey is disconcerting because it takes the fun out of sneakily hunting them down one by one and instead keeps sending you enemies to kill from a single bush. sure you can ignore the person walking, but the whole point is picking off enemies that are standing alone and vulnerable and when one keeps on walking your way it makes no sense to leave them be and go sneakily kill someone else further away or near other enemies.

exploration is also done better in Origins. in Odyssey you are punished for exploring the world because even if you manage to kill someone a level or two higher than you you can't use their gear because you're level-locked, which makes exploring useless other than getting some XP which you can substitute easily with previously mentioned side quests. in Origins however, you can do what open world games actually are meant for you to do, which is explore everything and kill whoever you want if you're strong enough, plus get to actually use the rewarded gear.

Heka chests in Origins are a great way to get Helix items without actually spending any Helix credits. it's a draw-of-the-luck type deal but at least they're affordable and you can get some pretty great stuff just using gold to buy them.
the replacement Heka chest in Odyssey however doesn't take game's currency but instead a new type which is harder to get and completing any set or getting even one thing you want is a grind.
both are completely optional but better done in Origins because they don't require you to take that extra step of finding the other type of currency to buy them with.

I found Egypt more interesting and on the other hand they did improve a lot of things in Odyssey. Wouldn't use the term 'is better' for those two games. Both provide some good entertainment.

The only one i really regret buying is Valhalla. Combat animations are so much worse than in Origins or Odyssey, Britain had not the most interesting buildings at that time and to give you something to climb around they placed roman style buildings rome itself would have been proud of on every damn hill, which is kind of ridiculous, and i could continue with stuff i don't like for a long time.

I enjoyed Odyssey more.

I played Odyssey first and then Origins... I like Origins a lot.

Egyptian theme + Homophonic desert score made it so great.
