I think Coptic. According to history it was spoken till the 17th century AD

I think it is Coptic too. It still has some use in religious christian practice.

I think there's also some arabic spoken? or it might sound like something similar. You can hear it all over in different regions.

While I can't understand it, the emotions still come thru just fine. Perhaps I listened to Simlish too long.

I've got that one, and a whole list of others I thought about sharing! :-)

Ha ha! There's a line when you climb or jump in front of NPCs that sounds an awful lot like Simlish for "What an idiot." It doesn't really sound like that, but it was close enough to give me a laugh.

Fun fact is, we can reconstruct ancient greek language and vulgar latin to some dergree, but we actually can't reconstruct ancient egyptian. So, greeks and romans in the game speak languages related to them historically, but what do egyptians say is really interesting.

Here is the collection I have in raw format. I went by phonetics as best I could. I am no expert by any means.

Some of them are quite interesting. My favorite is the "Awesome soup"! :-D

I think "Get to a high position, Ga-ret" is the same as "Ve sizzhun geret", just different speakers maybe...?

"We don’t know exactly what ancient Egyptian was. So we had linguists actually develop a language based on research. We consulted Egyptologists [...] and dialogue coaches [...] to establish our target sound, and we cast actors with Arabic, Hebraic and African backgrounds to make it really come to life. The language spoken by the crowds is largely based on Sir Alan Gardiner‘s Egyptian Grammar [...]."

Ashraf Ismail, Ubisoft Game Director, in: The Guardian

Coptic has been the youngest of the Egyptian languages, spoken from the 2nd to the 17th century and still a bit in use in the liturgy of the Egyptian Christians - the Copts, who make about 10% of Egypt's people today.

AC:O plays ~ 45 BC iirc, so the language in the game is supposed to be Egyptian before Coptic.

One thing I've noticed, the more I play, the more I hear. I know early on I said there didn't seem to be that much variation in what some of the people are saying. Boy, was I wrong.

The more I try to capture and write down, the more I realize there is a TON of unique dialog.

There are several mentions of what sounds like the gods' names. Hathor seems to get mentioned a lot.
