previous assassins' game were 'counter, kill...counter, kill...' over and over =/ there wasn't any skill involved to me, you just waited until the counter prompt appeared, hit it, then auto killed them afterwards
this way you actually do have to try to kill people xD
All you do is spam shield break and wave your sword like Prince of Persia.
Because mashing the same button over and over again without doing anything else was more satisfying in previous games ?
You say that previous AC had a better combat... they didn't have any combat system to begin with, it was just a boring QTE with only one button to press to see the combat plays itself.
Finally, we have an actual combat system in Origins, sure it's not perfect, but it's definetely a great step in the right direction.
Where it becomes cool is when you go into camps or anything with more enemies that could potentially attack at the same time. One big guys who melees you and one normal guy with a bow who interupts you constantly by putting arrows in your behind, that's already more difficult. And everything from 3 guys on, each on the same level as you, it is actually better to run.
Talking about nightmare, no-Hud and enemy auto-level. Not sure how it is in normal difficulty with all little HUD helpers on (aka peasant mode).
The moment they come from all sides, things get tricky and running is best option. For example I go into 2 star camp, see 2 guys in the area, fight them. I missed the 3rd guy. A heavy guy. He hits me with power strike from behind. Game over. That's cool. No rushing into camps like some animal.
Just use nightmare difficulty and the game gets good.
I'm truly surprised that you guys find ACO's combat "boring" and say the previous ones were better... Syndicate has one of the worst, spammy, boring and unchallenging combat I've ever seen in a videogame. The others are just as spammy, except you were able to one-hit everyone.
ACO is the only one so far to feature a proper combat system in the whole AC series.
(also I don't get the "fire bomb" arguement, in my playthrough, fire bombs barely deal any damage, guess tools are nerfed in Nightmare mode ? That's a genuine question).
For the elephants, I found them boring though. Big health pool for a fight longer than it should be (again talking for Nightmare mode, because it's actually the normal mode). The idea is nice, reminded me of Legendary Ships in Black Flag, but elephants were a bit boring nonetheless. Still liked the idea behind it though.
But again, when you say this kind of things : "It's just slash at stuff until it's dead"... How's the combat in AC3 and 4 Again ? Oh yeah... Slash at stuff until it's dead, except the "stuff" will never defend itself and you'll be able to one-hit kill everyone around (no one will attack you anyway). I fail to see how it is "better".
