Other than that, higher level mean, they give more damage to you, and they can take more damage.
So the answer is... just don´t let them hit you, and you have to hit them more often, as higher they go... ;)
As others have mentioned, the level cap goes up with the DLC's. With the Hidden Ones, you can go to level 45. Then, The Curse of the Pharaohs will take you to level 55.
If you have the DLC's installed, then your levels can begin rising towards your new level cap no matter where you are playing.
