Assassin's Creed Origins
Didn't play AC Syndicate, so...
Is there anything important about the story in the previous game? Last AC I played was Unity.

What happened to the sage in the present time? And the assassins (Desmond's dad and cia)? Anything I should know?

The modern day line is pretty much dead with the story going literally nowhere. ACO may have a chance to revitalize the section with actual playable content other than mere cutscenes, but I won't hold my hope high if I were you.
this story could really refresh the main ac story again if they do it right. But yeh to the question this is prity much a prequal if anything so you wont need to know much at all of what happend in those newer AC games

You can skip syndicate completely. Just make sure to watch all the modern day cutscenes. Those are NOT skippable if you want to be updated with the plot.
Desmond's possible resurrection hinted.
Generally speaking, the modern portions are the only ones that really have a continuous story (though I believe even that has mostly fallen out). The stories of the main characters you play tend to all be their own individual thing, with the exception maybe of Ezio's stories in the 3 games he was in.

That said, I don't know where they are planning on going in terms of the 'main' story in AC Origins. All I know is that it really fell out after AC3.

Spoilers below
You can Ignore Syndicate and Unity.Just remember,In syndicate Abstergo is trying to create first civ clones and they now have the shroud which will speed up the process. Also its actually juno manipulating them so we may see Juno in physical form.
I honestly am completely lost when it comes to modern day story of AC.

IIRC, Juno was 'accidentally' released into the Internet in AC4 then wasn't heard of again. It's supposed to be latest plot twist but Ubi gave up on it basically for whatever reason.

Then ACR, ACU and ACS all went back to Assassins and Templars hunting each other and racing to track down some new random 1st Civilization artifacts Ubi invented.

I dont blame you. The modern day is scattered all across different media and sometimes its hard to get the big picture. But once you piece it together, you would know that some pretty awesome things are coming forth. Nolan North( voice actor of Desmond) has already spilled the beans on the original ending which was supposed to be AC3. I think they are still moving towards the same ending.

All I got from ACU and ACS is that you are some guy or girl (zippity doo!) who is contacted by Rebecca to do... stuff. I have no clue what they were doing, because unlike in 1-4, where I actually was involved with the game outside of Animus, here they decided to go with cinematics, thus making me black out every time those were shown. I enjoyed the 4th one actually, because I could do stuff there (I think Rogue also was like that, but I gave up on it half way through, due to lack of time I had).
I really hope that they either go for proper gameplay in modern times (I liked those puzzles, when hacking computers), or drop it completely, because watching cinematics is the cheapest thing they could do.

Don't know if ACO will play out simply like a 'here's a story taking place in ancient Egypt once upon a time' thing or not. Optimistically it's gonna be a no as there's too much modern day arc material going to waste otherwise, and that the devs still have to provide a reason and purpose for all the memory accessing/time traveling stuff.

I think it's because the series' main writer Corey May, left Ubisoft to start his own writing / production company.

Corey May:

Then ACR, ACU and ACS all went back to Assassins and Templars hunting each other and racing to track down some new random 1st Civilization artifacts Ubi invented.

I think that's because Ubisoft doesn't have Corey's vision, and so are kind of like, 'Uh, well, let's have Assassins and Templars fight each other. That stuff happens in AC, yeah, there we go...'
May didn't leave Ubi till 2015 though. By that time the plot of ACS would have formed already.

I seriously suspect it's about something else.
They should just dump the entirety of the "Abstergo" story altogether, nobody cares about that. All you want to do is to run around atop buildings in different parts of history and assassinate people, do cool stuff and see the views.
Ok school is in session,There are spoilers ahead
First a little info on the peices of eden, they were made by the people who made Human beings known as "ISU".
Apple-Taps int the human brain to alter thoughts and emotions, can be used to manipulate people.Alternatively a gathering of people could also use the apple and acheive a goal using their thoughts(like preventing a massive solar flair.
Shroud-Can regenerate a body on a cellular level
Ankh-can ressurect the dead,Only catch is you need a base consience for the resurrected body.
Sword of eden-A symbol for hope. When used properly the sword is supposed to give hope and calm the people it is targetted towards. It was used by De molay and also Joan of Arc and they Glowed with the sword(Because they were genetically a lot closer to the "ISU")It wassupposed to be a symbol for the Templar order to follow because its effects are the purpose of the templar order.
Observatory:A tool used to keep an eye on everything a person does.YOu just need a little of that persons blood.
Box:map to Hidden Devices which help the earth stay in balance(or something)

AC1-Desmond is kidnapped by Abstergo, their plan is to find the Apple of Eden through Desmond's Ancestor Altair and launch said apple through a sattelite and gain complete control over Humanity.
AC2:That plan fails because Desmond and Lucy escape from abstergo.Desmond has a rich ancestory of assassins so they put him in the animus again to train him.To make him the master assassin through the bleeding effect. If a subject is kept in the animus for too long, they start learning and adopting moves of their ancestors. That includes fighting and climbing.IF a subject is kept for too long in the animus they may even go mad.

At the end of AC2 When Ezio discovers minerva,Minerva speaks directly to Desmond Via ezio to warn him of the impending disaster

Desmond wakes up amidst a templar attack and they are forced to flee

ACB: Continues right where AC2 left off,now they are searching for an apple(that once belonged to ezio). They find the apple but it is rigged by juno(an isu).Desmond goes into a state of shock and juno makes him stab lucy.Desmond falls into a coma

ACR:They stuff Desmond back into the animus and it works for some reason. The only way for desmond to recover from the shock is completing his ancestors story.

This time in the end Ezio speaks to Desmond saying that he is giving up on his life as an assassin. Also Desmond acheives full sync, goes to the nexus and communicates with Jupiter(another ISU).Jupiter shows them how the previous solar flare killed his kind.
And tells himhow he can prevent that.Desmond wakes up.

AC3: Desmond visits the temple he needs to go to to prevent the solar flare,Juno is trapped in that temple, she triggers a vision and desmond collapses. They stuff desmond into the animus again and he starts following Haytham.Haythams amulet is the key to opening the main doors of the temple

Ac3 ends with Desmond finding the key, opening the temple and finding the device.Juno and minerva appear.Minerva warns that if desmond touches the pedestal to "save" the world Juno would be unleashed in it.Or Juno could remain trapped and the world rise from the ashes. Also if Desmond touches the pedestal he dies.

So Desmond Dies,Saves the world Juno is free.

Ac4:Abstergo harvest Desmonds DNA and tweaks the animus so that others can view the memories too.One candidate researches n Edward Kenway. The pirate.

There the player meets the sage known as Bartholomew roberts.Sages are basically the same person. They are various forms of Aita(Juno's Husband) whom Juno had immortalised to be born as a human every millenia.

BArt roberts shows the observatory to Mr Kenway(and immidiately betrays him.)

back in the modern day A guy named John directs the player to hack into various computers and provide the info to the assassins.

After repeted security breaches player is shifted to an isolated chamber.
The final hacking mission involves us going to the main sever area where Juno appears in front of us.She says she needs more time and peices of eden to occupy a physical body

The game ends we come to know that John is a sage and he is shot by abstergo security.

ACRogue:Petty Assassin Templar squablble rearding a box(Description above).Assassins are ♥♥♥♥♥ and Achilies is even more so.HAytham rocks.

Also petty Assassin Templar squabble in the MD

ACU:Abstergo try to clone precursors.Call it the phoenix project.

ACS:Phoenix project continues now they need the shroud to properly restore the bodies. They get the shroud and in the end we get to know that it is Juno maniulating the templars.SO Juno is possibly getting a physical body.

Also Desmond has a son.And has joined an organisation know as the instruments of thefirst will. They serve Juno.ALso Desmond's Son is a sage.

Movie:Complete and utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ so just skip it.

There,All done.

Now tell me with a straight face that it doesnt sound epic.

Oh, that is so cheap! Come on!

Also, you said Sages should be born every millennia, but AC4 and Unity take place during the same millennia.

Umm, well, no I still stand by my opinion that it would have been a better series of games if it was just historical and realistic than this sci-fi piece of crud they jammed in there. But kudos for the recap.
