Its an ACO discussion form. I doubt id be getting this game anyway if they are pushing political left wing ideology on it. I like the Romans, its a shame they always get depicted so poorly.

Pushing a political left wing ideology? You're looking for the Wolfenstein forum.

Portraying imperialists as Templars seems fair, since they're all about protecting people from themselves; authoritarianism, I think it fits. Though I'm not familiar with how powerful the Templars were in this era of the story.

I hope they didn't pretend they were just an evil group of oppressors however. I bet they did though, a lot of people these days enter a blind fury when thinking about any imperialists, despite the fact the greatest nations on earth exist because of it.

Did I just stumble upon an internet flame war from 2200 years ago?

Romans are portrayed as complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and invaders with no respect for Gods in this game (except one Roman dude you find in a quest called "The good Roman")

Whatever we think it's an accurate depiction or not, that's how they're basically portrayed in this game.

Sounds like the typical anti-authoritarian propoganda ubisoft is known to push out. sad.

I can't tell if the OP is serious or just role-playing on a forum.

What have the Romans ever done for us? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7tvauOJMHo

All classical civilizations were somehow expansionist and oppressive. The romans were simply better than the other ones. And if not Rome, it would have been Carthage, Parthia or one of the diadochi states. Luckily the romans also had great skills in spreading culture and often allowed the oppressed to continue their lifes and to worship their gods.

But still I'm glad the Germans eventually stalled the Empire and finally defeated them.

Quite true, but it wasn't so much that the Germanic tribes beat them as it was the Steppe tribes combined with a series of incompetent rulers (a whole lot of "____ the mad" in those days) and the western roman empire collapsed. The eastern roman empire survived for quite a while as the Byzantines, although they never regained their former splendor

Germany compared to Rome back then was like Somalia is today compared to the united states.

At least the Germans figured out a way to permanently stop their legions, as the empire was at the height of its power. Something all others failed to achieve. Better live free in a farming community in the woods of Germania than to live under dreadful conditions in a roman slum.

Aaaand then the "Dark Age" began. Endless warfare, disease from poor sanitation systems, etc. the whole world fell apart. Thats like if the united states collapsed into never ending civil war with every state as its own nation.

Out of all the civilizations of the time, they were among the least oppressive. They conquered, they controled and they built the world.

Unlike any other civilization of the time, they allowed people from the bottom of society to move up and even become emperor like Marcus Aurilius whom started off in the legion.

Many people whom were not roman were granted citizenship after service as Auxiliaries in the legions and many legionaries were given land and a pension after several decades of service as well as a chance to become a centurion or evocati.

Slaves in the empire even had rights that allowed them to petiton an arrest on their masters for cruel actions.

Rome also introduced some of the first social programs, publicly funding roads, aquaducts, sewer systems and even fed the poor.

Everyone who served in the legion got a free education to learn to read and write to better follow orders and carry out messages.

Other civilizations however... none of these things existed outside the roman empire.
As a true lover of Roman history I appreciate the fact that you see many of the good things but Rome had a lot of problems. They were extreme xenophobes and although they had many great generals name one world changing Roman artists or scientist. There was also a great divide between the wealthy and the poor. Rome much like the U.S. now was not a democracy it was a oligarchy with a rigid class system. You are correct that a lucky slave who was allowed to work may someday buy his freedom but even then he was given just Freeman status and took the last name of his former master.
Rome also was brutal in warfare in fact a Roman senator who opposed Rome's tactics was quoted as saying "Rome creates a desert and calls it peace".
Romes famous Colosseum games although incredibly fascinating to us we have to remind ourselves that this was wholesale human Slaughter for the sake of entertainment.
I love Rome it's my favorite all-time ancient civilization and when it comes to anything historical it's the most interesting thing to me but as a person who truly loves history I have to remind myself that as much as I love it I still have to be truthful.
Gladitorial fights were mostly non slave combatants and rarely fought to the death. It was also not the main function of the colosseum, as games, theature and other forms of entertainment were held there 99% of the time. A gladiator fight was uncommon and a fight to the death between slaves an even rarer occurance. Hollywood just loves to demonize authority. The roman empires main public attraction was actually the circus maximus.
