Is there somewhere to practise combat?
Like some kind of training dummy that reacts?

I find the combat to be very confusing, as I'm so used to the way it plays in the old games. Really need a decent amount of time to get used to it, and just wondering if there's somewhere to do it without completing missions in a very scrappy way.

Does it matter if you finish them in a scrappy manner so long as you finish them?

There was even a tutorial of sorts during the opening half hour.

Maybe find some random wildlife or enemies to practice on...

I'm also finding combat to be sloppy, chaotic and frustrating. I don't know if it's the controls or if there's something I'm just "not getting" about it, but as soon as there's more than one enemy, things devolve into a mad frenzy for me.

Im using keyboard and mouse to play. I don't like the fact I got to resort to my middle mouse button to focus on a single enemy coz its fiddly. overall you just gotta utilize dodging and taking advantage of assassination when the bar fills up. not to mention using the skill tree to improve your combat.

still getting used to it. past ac combat was easy af for me, this brings a new challenge and a new take on combat.

i think it's the FOV, it's super narrow, you can't really judge distance because of it

Everyone having trouble with combat, this is what I did. I know the combat at first is very frustrating but after I got used to it is pretty cool. I spent maybe 2 hours just running around gathering resources and attacking forts and doing minor quests. Like someone else said even fighting animals actually helps. The biggest thing was customizing the controls to what I like. This is a must becuase the default I terrible IMO. I switch the middle mouse button to blocking which was a huge help and made the Heavy attack the right mouse button just by itself. I hope it helps. You have to learn how to use the dodge especially to counter...I know maybe these might be like common sense but I was at the point in the beginning saying I hate this game, the combat sucks lol.

I changed it so right mouse button is block, as that just feels way more intuitive to me.

Also I'm still deciding on using mouse and keyboard or controller (yes controller, this isn't an FPS), and the legacy settings for pad seems much better.

Just find some guards around town and practice on them. And if you need to, kill a civilian to attract their attention

I personally use a controller for these types of games and the combat is wonky in the beginning, the best way (In my opinion) is to just go into a populated area with guards and just fight them all. I know I don't like to use specific weapons, either for the fact that they feel unpolished or too slow.

Can echo that it's just really awkward and frustrating at first, but you get over the hump and then it's quite enjoyable and (mostly) natural. I came so close to giving up on the game in my first couple hours, but glad I stuck with it - just finished it, dozens of hours later and it's the most I've enjoyed an AC game since Black Flag.

Mouse and keyboard is fine if you are used to it. I could never use a controller personally. Also I find it way better to actually NEVER lock on. It messes me up whenever I do it. Just face the bad guys and you will block if you shield is up.

I pretty much only block if I'm on horseback fighting a group of guys on horseback.

On the ground, I find it's much better to just use the running shield charge and finish them off. Works against pretty much every human and you never need to break shields. If they shoot an arrow at you, the shield acts normally and if they don't, well, they get smashed.

Try the alternate mapping, I find it works better

I use a controller and find the right trigger and right button to use the overpower attack is quite awkward...

You can always remap your controls as well.

Personally, I use keyboard and mouse because the game has too many controls to comfortably fit on the controller w/out feeling awkward, imo.

It's times like these when a Naga comes in handy.
