Fixes for multiplayer connection issues not working

The game has always worked great for me solo, but a week and a half ago my daughter got a PC of her own so we could finally hunt together. The first time we did, no problems, played 3-4 hours with not a single disconnect. Every single time since then, though, we can't get more than a couple minutes into a quest, assuming we even get to start the quest without one of us dropping out of the session. I've read the fixes and we've disabled the Steam overlay, added the -nofriendsui parameter and set the browsing ping to 250. We've tried taking every other device in the house off of wi-fi. And still we can't stay connected. I feel like I'm running out of things to try, but what should be my next step? I've considered switching from wi-fi to ethernet despite that it would be a big hassle to run it from one end of the house to another. But then, if it was the wi-fi, I don't understand why we were able to play with zero problems that first day. Help?
