That should be the first thing to do in this day and age. Steam has great controller support for those who need it, right out of the box.

You can disable big picture with this setting on... In big picture go to the game click settings under the game then disable controller support, next time you launch the game it wont use big picture yet still use the controller settings you enabled.

Doesn't work for me. I've tried calibrating in steam too. MHW won't reconize my PS4 controller.

Does not work for me. on ether xbox or ps4 controller. some times i can get in the game with my controller but after 5 minutes they stop working and no matter what i do wont work again tell i restart my computer. then same thing, works for 5 mins and stops working again.

I had to do this initially a few days ago, and then it started happening again with my mouse cursor moving all over the desktop and MHW didn't recognize my controller properly. Restarted my PC, toggled the xbox/ps4 controller settings in Big Picture mode, nothing worked.

Leaving the Steam beta worked though.

not sure why this is but everytime I started the game with fraps open it wasnt working but when I opened it afterwards the controller would work. I tested this a few times but it sounds so far fetched that it could just me having bad luck.

This worked for me as well actually. So glad I saw this! Not sure about whats causing other people's issues, but it could be related to overlays (like Nvidia Experience and such).
