Possible fix for controller disconnecting mid-game
This has worked for me for the last 2 days, I have had 0 controller disconnects while ingame:

Open steam settings, go to controller

click the general controller settings

Make sure your controller type is checked for the config (for me it was xbox config)

Make sure "shutdown controller after idle" timer is set to NEVER, for reasons unknown it was set to default of 15 min shutdown for me

It seems like that's a big picture thing, and MHW wasn't always starting in big picture mode for me which made it seem random. After stopping steam from disconnecting my controller on "idle" whatever that means (apparently that meant actively using the controller for 15 min straight?) I have not had a single controller disconnect issue since.

Thanks for sharing - hopefully it works out for others.

Unfortunately, for me, no love. This was one of the first things I tried, but the disconnects continued occurring. Lately, as I noted in this thread, I've had success so far by disabling "HiD-compliant" devices besides the HiD-compliant Game Controller within Device Manager under Human Interface Devices.

If you've played Dark Souls on PC, you may be familar with this hack to get faster startup times. In my case, MH:W had both very slow startup times and frequent controller disconnects. Decided to give this a try after reading someone comment that he/she resolved the issue by disconnecting some of their USB peripherals.

In limited play since making these changes, much faster startups and no controller disconnects.

Thinking about it more, I also moved the controller from a USB 2.0 slot to a USB 3.0 slot. That could be the solution, as well.

Hi Huffadopolis - thanks for the report. We're not actually able to turn off xbox controllers, but in the past we've temporarily faked a disconnect in Steam. MHW is probably getting confused by the device quickly coming and going and I'll remove that in the next beta.

Is anyone else having this issue? That change is now in the latest stable Steam client.

Drat - just happened. In dialog with an NPC and didn't respond right away...maybe 60 seconds or so. Controller cut right out.

Kind of a necro, but I have the issue as well. PS4 controller disconnects mid game and my character runs around, steam and MH:W both crash soon after.

Can you look in your Steam/Dumps folder in the Steam install directory for .dmp files and send them to austinp@valvesoftware.com

Certainly!
I am still having this issue. I have a playstation 4 Dualshock 4 controller that I use through bluetooth with InputMapper via xbox controller emulation. This works for any game as long as I connect it before I start the game. My controller is still connected but randomly while playing MH:W my controller just stops working, even though the controller is still lit up and says its connected. One reason I've never been able to thoroughly enjoy MH:W even though I bought the deluxe edition pre-order.. The game this many months later still has not been completely fixed. Keyboard and Mouse is actually a decent way to play now but I'm so used to playing with a controller (that disconnects randomly) that I just want to keep playing the game this way.

Unfortunately the game still seems to be a buggy mess even into 2019 now.

This is a Steam issue and not Monster Hunter: World. I'll be shipping a change that fixed a very similar issue for the Switch controller early this month. Instructions on opting into the Steam beta client can be found here:

I'm having the same problem with a wired 360 controller, but it's on other games. Hollow Knight and now Sekiro.

i'm also using a wired xbox360 controller and always have been. Since the last like 6 months, for some reason my controller will randomly disconnect from in game, and i have to panic switch to keyboard to pause [if the game even allows pausing], then just keep tab switching from game to any other random window, until steam finally feels like reconnecting my controller for whatever reason.

it's pretty annoying, since it makes any sort of fighting game or souls-type game potentially lethal...
