Good time to start Monster Hunter?
Wondering on people's opinions on if now is a good time to jump into Monster Hunter World (or Rise) even though the new one is coming out in a couple months.
I've heard World is the better jumping in point and the player numbers are much higher so would be easier to find people to co-op with.

Edit: Got a MH: Rise code from a friend’s old Humble Bundle and it’s alright but I see glaring problems.
1. Next to no one joins my lobby
2. People I have had join play sound effects in their mics to mess with me in the mission, yell slurs, or sit in the village and don’t help.
I even had 2 people join in my lobby and start playing another mission instead of joining mine which was in progress. Got some very rude messages when I kicked them.
3. If I join another person’s game they only do their missions so I never get any progress

Overall not a very good first impression.

Edit 2: Joined a few lobbies right now to see if I was just unlucky before.
Every SINGLE lobby has had at least one person on the mic yell "Who the *** are you?" followed by me getting kicked.
I'm starting to think this community is pretty bad.

Updated post with experiences from MH Rise.

May still get World since it’s 7 dollars and change from a bundle on Rise’s page but not a good start so far.

I see your problem, I think people prefer World than Rise due to many difference. (Me either)
If you like to play with other people. I suggest join some discord or community is far better experience than random. Mostly because while the game still being play and fun at all time, people move from game to game so random join will be less and less.

You can hunt all monster alone, the wall will start at both title mid-expansion due to difficulty spike.

Also join with random (fire SoS) most likely be veteran hunter that take late game weapon to help, which can butcher your hunting experience as it deal 20x more dmg than it use to be at the same tier..

Never had a problem finding others or with toxicity in game in Deep Rock Galactic so that why I'm starting to think the Monster Hunter community might be a tad too toxic.

Edit: If I have to go out of game to find a group then something is clearly wrong with the game itself.

Can't deny that due to how lobby in MH is more like for group play instead of whole server. Every body are free to play their own quest in any lobby too.

One more problem is MH match making is not like other quick join. You have to select the quest rank and select the one you want, so people usually join the one they like. Which fit well in this kind of game. (BTW, you need to use the SoS flare function to open the quest public each time or else only people in your lobby can see your quest.)

My take about community is random usually don't always show up. Anyway, you take it with grind of salt.

I prefer World's weapon balance and combat mechanics, but Rise has better cosmetics and weapon designs. So many of the weapons in World just look like variations on the Bone tree.

Pretty much this. The matchmaking in World will be very underwhelming until you unlock your Hunter rank (minimum 10-ish hours of gameplay). Bear in mind that this game is approaching 7 years old and still excellent...but you will definitely have trouble initially with matchmaking.

Steam charts still sports an average of 30k PC players over the last 30 days.

Not 100% true, but close enough. There is some content that requires a party (Behemoth FFXIV cross-over content), and some content that is dramatically easier with a party (Kulve Taroth and Witcher cross-over). Other than that, basically everything can be done solo, even the "multiplayer" oriented Gathering Hub quests (I did them all on my Playstation account solo years ago).

how in the genuine hell did you find multiple people with mics in this series, and in rise no less?
I think i have only ever found a single person with a mic and it was on ps4 mhw the same week it launched and never again
have you considered changing your steam server region?
MH community is one of the best of the best, i dont know if i even believe you on that post. I want to play with randoms with mics wtf

Be my guest and play with the people who scream in their mic before kicking you 10 seconds later.

Also I’m not changing my server location because I enjoy my ping being below 50.

It's now a great time to start with the discount right now. Iceborne Master Edition is 73% off and contains the base game and the expansion. That's a steal.

Ping doesn't matter in World unless it's absurdly high. I can count the amount of times I noticed any latency on one hand in 1600 hours and I played with people from 10k+ kilometers away regularly. Just saying.

PS: You don't need to bother with the region swapping thing, either. There is a mod that lets you override Steam's "region lock" so you can see sessions hosted by literally anyone on the planet, if you choose to (by setting it to Worldwide). I usually recommend setting it to "Far", though.

This never get old, hunter. We can tell this joke about World's weapon design for eternity X3

I do like many thing in Rise (Specially monster variety that actually have different way to attack then charge / quick heavy attack), but also don't like and hate some to the bone. So I rather going back to World instead of Rise.

You right, I forget about it, my aology. I mean in the campaign for average player. Event quest and Siege is another story through. The Chocobo(lol) is brutal for many melee player. Behemoth, (temper)Leshen, Kulve are design to be multiplayer-base from the start. So I forget about it.

And Mossvine, the ultimate hunter grinder.

"Every SINGLE lobby has had at least one person on the mic yell "Who the *** are you?" followed by me getting kicked."

The ♥♥♥♥ is happening on Rise lmao. I didn't play Rise yet but in World you don't have to share the session for people to be able to join your quest, you can fire an SOS Flare and everyone online (in rational limits I assume) can see and join.

Don't expect us to join but keep trying, some of us are smart enough to farm the "Helping Hunter" stuff we can get, like the Pendant. :mhwgood:

If I could take the open map design of World, the weapon mechanics (and changeable styles) and cosmetics of Rise, and marry those to the sheer diversity of monsters in Generations, I think I would have my perfect game.

WTF is going in rise lol.
I play this game for like 400hr and didn't hear anyone doing Voice chat at all.

I jumped into MH:Wo for the first time after the beta for MH:Wi. It is a great introduction to the series and the player base seems fairly active.

I was considering waiting for MH:Wi but the technical state of the beta was so messy, and requirements are worrying, so I decided it is better to jump into Wo and see how Wi will turn out in February.
