A good early choice is always the Bone/Ore weapons (usually ore wins out IMO) because they're extremely easy to keep upgraded no matter what you're hunting.
Many early IB monsters like Viper Tobi-Kadachi (especially for LS), Coral Pukei, or Beotodus also have pretty solid weapons that aren't too hard to obtain.
For armor, Beotodus has a lot of good pieces that grant Health Boost in pretty efficient ways. Great Jagras armor is surprisingly good too, and most of the other early monsters have at least one MR piece that stands out as pretty good for early game. (eg. barroth legs rival some endgame armor in skill efficiency if you want Stun Resist 2) I would recommend a Beotodus/Great Jagras mixed set if you want to get a solid MR set as soon as possible.
Of course, you should move on through armorsets as you hunt more monsters, though, as later armorsets will come with much better skills and more deco slots overall.
I think that was a little extreme but as Bow main I simply didn't find any gear I actually liked until I got access to Velkana and Nami.
It's similar with other weapons. It's no big deal doing the early part of the story on High rank stuff if that's reasonably well build. Especially if you don't have to rely on KT weapons and can switch to better iceborne stuff.
Just do the switch to Iceborne stuff whenever you find some great party, you feel like you need more armor or get some juicy 4*decos you want to use.
And considering weapons. CB, GL and SwA perform really good on super low budget. So I'd probably recommend them if you want to progress through the story fast on Iceborne gear.
I also just went with whatever looks good for the weapon.
Most of the better stuff don't appear until your pretty far in, so don't bother upgrading too much of the sets you get along the road to finishing the story. Get them to about half way so you don't eat dirt and max out whatever you find to be your favorite as your gonna have to use it for when your farming later, until you can get the sets that are actually worthwhile.
