You should augment your weapons before trying to fight Fatalis. Less DPS in the Fatalis fight will make it harder.

Heavy bowgun:
Only spread is worth it against fatalis. If you can't use HBG without shields, don't bother. Very hard fight for ranged in general due to having less physical resistance. https://imgur.com/a/zGK6eBc
SNS also has very good DPS but it cant snipe fatty head easily and you may have to play with his blue flame.
Bad survivability aside, the Hitzones (HZVs) will be the main issue. Unless you have the right setup with the right teammates, you will be shooting him in the chest, since head damage sucks if you are ranged. That means you are not only a risk to the faint reserves due to being a Gunner, you will likely deal too much damage to the "wrong" part and risk getting everyone killed by blue flames. Unless your teammates break the head before you change the phase due to your overtuned damage*, of course.
TL;DR: Play melee against Fatalis
sa with zsd spam requires health augment or you are dead by every second attemp
Joking aside, and just out of curiosity, what's the snowman cheese?
Thanks a lot! Gonna check those links.
So I won't keep spamming response quotes: Thanks everyone for the replies, I like SnS mobility (its the weapon of the gods after all, thank Jocat) and versatility, and I'm not good with bulkier weapons that need a lot of time to sheathe and unsheathe, so I wasn't planning on go HB on fatty. I mostly went with SnS and CB through the whole game, so it would mean learning another set entirely, though I do may end up trying a mix of SA to break the horns and then just go back to SnS.
Did you guys just maxed the armors without augmenting them, or will I have to farm augments for all the pieces?

it is literally a gametesting mechanic leftover, which wasn't patched because people came forward with this long time after end of the support cycle
....
By Geralt's beard...
As far as I remember I augmented my armor and weapon fully, Fatalis is the endboss, you need all you can get to not get one shot.
i did a solo with GS, so im p sure you can do it with any other weapon. i'm not even that good, you just have to be in the right place at the right time.
try to augment + upg everything you have to its max, its worth googling some 'pre-fatalis' build, to help you get the most out of what equipment you have.
note that while you're attempting fatalis, its worth setting the cat to plunderblade, he'll usually grab 2-3 peices even if the run fails.
