Best Weapons against Fatalis?
I just reached fatalis, I'm a sword and shield user (though I do play Charge Blade as well, and I dabble in heavy bowgun from time to time).

I haven't upgraded the Grindin- I mean Guiding lands, but I did the Safi and Kulve sieges, so I have some of their weapons. Any recommendations of good armor and weapons? Please don't make me fight Alatreon again. I went on a trial run against Fatalis and lasted till the second phase with only the witcher swords.

Raging brachy SnS. Element SnS isn't that good due to the best DPS move not scaling with element. Of course the Alatreon SnS is also good but since you don't want to fight him... you're stuck with R. Brachy.

Check this for more info on SnS builds https://imgur.com/a/7DsAeoG

You should augment your weapons before trying to fight Fatalis. Less DPS in the Fatalis fight will make it harder.

And if you're interested in the other two weapons you mentioned:
Charge blade - https://mhchargeblade.net/mhw/iceborne-builds/#!#builds-anti
Heavy bowgun:
Only spread is worth it against fatalis. If you can't use HBG without shields, don't bother. Very hard fight for ranged in general due to having less physical resistance. https://imgur.com/a/zGK6eBc

best weapon against fatty imo is GS or LS because these 2 can easily snipe his head.
SNS also has very good DPS but it cant snipe fatty head easily and you may have to play with his blue flame.

Normal 3 is also an option, and Evasion skills are arguably better than just trying to tank everything with the clunky-ass HBG shield. You got that last part right, though. It's practically suicide to play ranged when hunting Fatalis.

Bad survivability aside, the Hitzones (HZVs) will be the main issue. Unless you have the right setup with the right teammates, you will be shooting him in the chest, since head damage sucks if you are ranged. That means you are not only a risk to the faint reserves due to being a Gunner, you will likely deal too much damage to the "wrong" part and risk getting everyone killed by blue flames. Unless your teammates break the head before you change the phase due to your overtuned damage*, of course.

TL;DR: Play melee against Fatalis

Every weapon is good, it depends on how good you are with the weapon. IG cartwheel attack and aerial mantle give you the chance to mount Fatalis approx. 3 times if not more, this is good if you want to hit the head often. I would use a Safjiva weapon against Fatalis if you are not going for Alaetron.

if you want to cheese it go SA and spam ZSD. every weapon is viable the really question is how good you are on a weapon you choose.

best weapon is right now the gunlance with snowman cheese, same as palico vulcan + snowman or a range weapon to trigger sleep and stun, while the palico is killing him

sa with zsd spam requires health augment or you are dead by every second attemp

Dude don't joke, everyone knows there are only three gunlance players in the whole world.

Joking aside, and just out of curiosity, what's the snowman cheese?

Thanks a lot! Gonna check those links.

So I won't keep spamming response quotes: Thanks everyone for the replies, I like SnS mobility (its the weapon of the gods after all, thank Jocat) and versatility, and I'm not good with bulkier weapons that need a lot of time to sheathe and unsheathe, so I wasn't planning on go HB on fatty. I mostly went with SnS and CB through the whole game, so it would mean learning another set entirely, though I do may end up trying a mix of SA to break the horns and then just go back to SnS.

Did you guys just maxed the armors without augmenting them, or will I have to farm augments for all the pieces?

it is literally a gametesting mechanic leftover, which wasn't patched because people came forward with this long time after end of the support cycle

By Geralt's beard...
if you want to do the cat+snowan glitch just be aware you need to have a pc that can handle the game at minimum 144fps stable or you wont 1 shot him.

I'd recommend you do augment armor, it's not that hard to farm the mats for it.

ZSD spam with health augment for braindead guarantee headbreak

As far as I remember I augmented my armor and weapon fully, Fatalis is the endboss, you need all you can get to not get one shot.

i did a solo with GS, so im p sure you can do it with any other weapon. i'm not even that good, you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

try to augment + upg everything you have to its max, its worth googling some 'pre-fatalis' build, to help you get the most out of what equipment you have.

note that while you're attempting fatalis, its worth setting the cat to plunderblade, he'll usually grab 2-3 peices even if the run fails.
