What a silly question. I bet you don't even sharpen your hammers in real life. Sad.

just how you had to sharpen most european medieval weapons, even though they were rarely used to cut someone and more often only crushed enemies.

Weapons get dent over time from using them, making them less effective. So you have to sharpen even some hammer.

A whetstone can also be used to remove rust from a weapon.

Honestly, what they are probably doing is buffing the hammer so that the surface of it remains flat. If one piece juts out, and it is not centered, then when you hit something with it, the weapon can twist on impact. This would cause a loss of damage and potential injury to your own wrists.

Then you sharpen the spikes.

And Rust can affect the longevity of a weapon, so it's a good thing to remove it.

I'm just glad they didn't add sharpening of arrows.

The spikes tend to be well spaced and balanced. Single spikes tend to be centered. Spikes will puncture and bite in. Multi-spikes will just get their twist stopped as they just quickly roll into another spike. Spikes get sharpened and straightened. Etc.

Because they tend to be single use.

Maybe the handle gets rough due to all the swinging or something.

Actually, I wish we had a plausible explanation. We got none. Maybe apart from "all melee weapons have to sharpen" design choice.
Cheshirepuss Jan 9, 2024 @ 3:28am
Wasn't the original justification the marginal amount of sharpness hammers use to have in the older games? Now it's all blunt.

You people take it too literally. It's just a gameplay mechanic that involves maintaining integrity of a weapon, another bar to manage. They could add custom animations for each weapon and call it something different depends on the weapon but that would just add confusion.
