Is it better to focus on one weapon?
Or is it ok to diversify to 2 or 3 different weapons? I had not really realized that some monsters' behaviour changes for example if you cut off their tail, so I am thinking I should start to invest in Long Swords to complement my main Light Bowgun.

Play what you enjoy. I play 5 different weapons and change it up depending on what I'm fighting or feel like using.

Can’t you cut off tails with slicing ammo?

In low rank and high rank yeah, but forget about it in Master rank. Tried it and it was just horrible.

Oh right this is true! Although I am not sure if I am using it wrong because I emptied whole set of slicing ammo on an Anjanath because I needed its tail but it wouldn't cut off.

A full stack of slash ammo will often not be enough by itself to cut a monster's tail. Bring along some slashberries so you can continue to craft more slashing ammo on the fly. I have a craft shortcut on my wheel to make it super fast.

For your question, you should just stick with whatever you enjoy using. Luckily, bowguns can do everything (cut tails with slash ammo, KO with sticky ammo, elemental ammo, etc) so you don't need to worry about being unoptimal.

Depends on how you want to play.

Personally, I use everything once in a while, but I used to exclusively use Bow and Longsword at the start.

I recommend picking one or two weapons you're interested in, then branching out from there.

now i could be wrong on this, but i think you wanna deal a bunch of damage to a part and then cut it with slicing ammo. I haven't played much bowgun but i think even not slicing damage counts torwards part breaking, it just cant actually break said part, hence why some weapons that dont deal blunt damage and keep bouncing off hard surfaces will eventually still break said surface. Again tho i could be wrong on this.

Unfortunately this is indeed incorrect. All damage must be cutting damage in order to cut tails. You cannot, for instance, break it with a hammer, and then slice it once for a cut.

Weapons are tools, you can have favorites and focus on whatever you want to master of course, but being able to adapt and make the most of some match-ups is never something bad, not to mention that you need to know most of them to a degree if you want to get some ok times in Arena.

you should be able to kill everything in the game with every weapon type so its really up to you.
I pretty much exclusively used the switch axe, 2000+ hunts and bearly even touched the other weapon types.

I would say it's definitely better to focus on one weapon until you are confident you know how to use it properly, and then branch out. If you just swap around at random it's likely you will not have memorized the combos and timings properly - which will put you at a disadvantage in general versus using what you have experience with.

I do use other weapons from time to time for example, but I'm a big fan of the hammer and so I "main" that at the moment. It isn't a very complicated weapon to use, and can be hard to get openings to do much damage with, but if you play your cards right you can knock monsters around with consistent knockdowns and the like. Ultimately you should just use whatever weapon you enjoy the most, and don't worry about what is "optimal" - think about swapping around once you are more confident.

Try out a different weapon once in a while. Just to get a different perspective on monster behavior. Not to mention, it'll make it so being stuck on one particular weapon will cause players to use said playstyle for everything. Can't counter if you're using the switch axe when a LS main tries out something different.
