About the DLC, if you like the base game, then it is a must-buy. The majority of its content is after the base game, but you do get some things right away.
The main issue is finding out if you like what Monster Hunter has to offer or not. The game is excellent, but not all games are for everyone. If this is your first MH game, then I would recommend buying just the base game for now, and then picking up the DLC once you feel that it is a game you enjoy.
If you ever need help on the normal/high rank stuff most people here are probably master rank at this point and could demolish any of those monsters. :P
