Monster Largest/Smallest Crown Hunting Question!
Hey fellow hunters!
I have recently returned to MHW, and I was looking through my main's notes. I have gathered quite a few crowns for monsters, but I never truly paid attention how or when I got them. Is there a reliable way to hunt specific monsters for specific crowns? Like specific missions maybe? or better chances to spawn XS or XL monsters for crowns in some of the missions? Or it is just random and getting lucky of stumbling upon what I need?

Mostly random chances, with a few event quests offering higher chances (the ones where you hunt like 4 or 5 monsters in a region) and some event quests again with 100% odds crowns of specific sizes.

thanks so much! I generally avoid multiple monsters per quest, but maybe smth i might delve into provided I can find a team doing them

Honestly with that many monsters per quest, and half of them being low tier easy monsters, the health scaling they have for that many targets can make those quests a breeze :)

Kulu Ya-Ku is my spirit animal in this game, esp meeting Anja and Nerg on low lvl :LaughingOwlcat: I see them, and I run the opposite direction.
But my main should be good though, thnx for the tip, it's quite handy!

For the most part, it's RNG.

You can get some of them via certain quests (usually Event Quests). People also spam investigations for crowns that aren't available in those. It's very time-consuming, since you just host the desired Investigation quest again and again until you spot the right size you want (either by measuring manually or with an overlay).

However, you also have another option, if you think RNG achievements are not worth the gamble. Subjectively speaking, they aren't about a challenge anyway. There is no challenge in rolling an n-sided die until you eventually and inevitably land the number you want. I personally prefer playing gacha games to quench my gambling tendencies (without paying, of course), so I used a mod to get the last 7 or 8 crowns I had left. I think I had... 1200 hours at the time? It's hard to remember at this point. By the time I used the mod, I had most of them already without directly grinding for them. I still can't imagine grinding for them deliberately, though. I don't particularly recommend using the mod, but you have the option to take a shortcut if you have a similar view to mine. Personally, I wouldn't have felt more satisfied if I had done it without the mod (if anything, I would have felt nothing at best and hatred towards myself and the game at worst), so it's not like it changed much for me. Your mileage may vary, however. Some people just love grinding, even if it has nothing to do with how fun it is or the challenge of getting there. Unfortunately, I care about the thrill of the hunt a little too much, so I wouldn't know.

After I did a few event quests solo, hunting for XL pookie and... Anja, I felt like I'm playing Warframe - slaying [mindlessly] stuff, but it helps me take mind off of things IRL, and I find this oddly therapeutic as it shifts my attention elsewhere. Rath is a bit annoying as im a CB main, and have to resort to cheesing him with flash bombs, but still he is annoying lil ♥♥♥♥. :mhwhappy:

I might be biased, because I used to be a DB and hammer main, which meant I had basically no reach, but CB feels like it has an easier match-up against Rathalos because you can position yourself, get 1-3 hits with the transformed weapon in and repeat the process, actually being able to cause damage while he's flying.

They're loads of fun, especially when you pull off sword-dancing across a large monster like diablos.
