Question about Deviljo. (HR 7*)
Is this guy supposed to be so difficult? I beat Nergigante no problem but the Deviljo's... This is terrible. I have beaten it twice. Once because of the quest and the handler - that one is basically a freebie. Second I beat it, took me over an hour of dying and even then I got lucky cause the Bezelheuz blew him up twice and he took like 2600 damage. And even then I had to trap him twice and man it's really big leap from everything else.

So what can I do? I am using DB. I feel like I never have time to do a lot of damage to him, so I can't stagger him to knock him down unless I'm lucky. He moves a lot and like a lot if I use Devil Flurry I usually end up comboing nothing cause he moved and I'm standing there flinging my lil daggers like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ while king demon lizard tailswipes me.

I usually end up just like pressing B and doing like a hit and run tactic.
I don't have issues with the boulder he throws, and his leap is dodgeable. But I really struggle with the tail swipe, the body side press and the elemental breath. The tail swipe has massive radius and happens quite quick so it's hard to anticipate. The body side press same issue, massive hitbox, can't really roll from it. The breath is hit or miss, it either has no chance of hitting me or i cant escape it, because im in the wrong spot. And sometimes he just insta kills you, if he knocks you over and then he will do like a full face slam into you. It's not often but it happened to me twice already.

Is there something I'm missing. If the game is this hard already I can't see myself being skilled enough for MR.

As for Deviljho, he might feel harder due to several reasons:

- He has a lot of HP, way more than nergigante and other elder dragons
- He is huge, so reaching the head is not easy for some weapons. And besides the head, all other hitzones are pretty bad, so dealing damage is way harder than it is with Nergigante for example. Combined with high HP, this makes Deviljho one of the longest fights in the game for normal, casual play.
- He has huge hitboxes. In order to fight him effectively, you have to either learn how to manouver through his attacks or iframe them. It's not as easy as sidestepping Nergigante's smash. Weapons that can block are also very useful. You need to change your mindset, fighting big monsters with huge hitboxes takes a different approach.
- He has a defense debuff, if you get affected he will hit you REALLY hard.

Tempered Savige Deviljho was the only monster to cart me 3 times so i guess he is meant to be hard.
Some regular monters in the game are near elder dragon level in power.

Jo kicks your ass when you first fight him. He just takes time to get used to. Do some sos flares with others to learn jo's moves and when to avoid them and when to attack. We have all been there. If you think regular jo is fun, just wait until you get to tempered jo and then savage jo. Skill comes with practice and time. Don't give up! It is so rewarding when you finally manage to take him down.

Tail swipe you avoid by going under him, shoulder check you have to try and roll the opposite way he's going and get to the other side before your I-frames run out. Sweeping breath attack can be a pain sometimes, you really just have to work on your positioning for that (or get evade extender from Kushala or something). When you're pinned hit him with a flash bomb, you should still be able to equip it while down, just need to be quick.

It's all practice, you'll get better, it just takes time to build your skills and game sense.

My strategy for solo has been to stand near/under his legs until you trip him, as that seems to be the only safe place to stand against this tall monster that likes to sweep the width of the entire screen. A drag to try and do this in multiplayer though as people will crowd in the same place flinching each other. Being underneath him also removes any concern for his breath attack.

Simply put, you have to channel your inner Mike Tyson and get deep in the pocket!

Deviljho is quite an oddball monster in terms of how he gets you but can be mastered. Some tips for dealing with the fight:

  • The spot you want to focus on as a melee weapons user is the legs. Spots like the head, chest while enraged, or the tail to cut it are of course ideal, but unrealistic thanks to Jho's height. Stay under the legs and focus on those.

  • As a Dual Blades user specifically, hit and run is definitely the way to go. Committing to long attacks like the demon rush with Jho is very unwise as you can't really get away with it. Stick to basic attacks, those are still very effective and deal solid damage, you don't need to 100% commit.

  • For the knockdown plus full facial slam, you can use the slinger while downed so that's how you counter it, Flash Pods work great.

  • For the sweeping breath attack, positioning is a large part of it but the bottom line is that it's a lengthy attack so as long as you aren't stuck in an animation you should be able to superman dive even in the worst case positioning scenario. Remember as a last resort that even without any levels in Evade Window, rolling through it IS possible.

  • Oh, and watch for Defense Down that's inflicted by Jho's saliva, negate it by using Adamant Seeds or Armorskins.

I didn't know this game had i-frames thats legit fascinating to learn.
So pinned, meaning when I'm down on the ground? So that's what that is. I didn't really use a flash bomb yet. I was actually reading here that they are bad so I just ignored them.

This makes a lot of sense. I was thinking about Negri and why he is so much easier. It really does come down to size. I can't fickin hit deviljo in the face. He avoids a lot of attacks just cause of his sheer size so its not a dps race.

Ahh. So I can prepare for it quite well. Thanks for this advice. I need armorskins. Stick around the legs.
You got this. :thumb:

Also for Dual Blades, he's weak against thunder and dragon element despite using the latter. Raw works, but DB shines with elemental damage.

While in the middle of the fight you should stick to eating Adamant Seeds to cancel his debuff because drinking an Armorskin potion takes a really long time to drink (feels like longer than a potion). Seeds are just a one bite quick animation.

Unless you have Speed Eating 3, then sure chug Armorskins all day long. 👍
I made a deviljo daggers
I killed him two more times. Kinda getting the hang of it but he still kills me 1 or 2 times.
The thing that gets me is I often end up underneath him and then the camera goes weird and I honestly can't see wth he is doing. Is he gonna stomp is he gonna swipe is he gonna what

But I've kinda managed to figure out his hit boxes so I can do more damage faster.

So apparently there's two more tiers oof

3rd tier is the Master Rank Jho, so you probably don't have to worry about that for a while, assuming you're getting or have IB
