I'm confused how MR works?
I know the story finishes at Shara Ishvalda, I'm currently at Velkhana now, hoping to find a full squad to fight it.

Apparently there's some monsters and gear locked behind MR level? Isn't MR really hard to level up?

Edit: Oh yea, I forgot to mention. I have no idea what the guiding lands are.

Works just like HR did. Advance the story to level up. After the story, hunting monsters levels it up (including all the ones you hunted up to that point).

Not really , keep doing quest and eventually you will unlock more .
But if you want to level up MR faster , you can do event quests .

On another note , main story quest do not tie to MR .

There are monsters in the endgane area yes. Nah you generate it pretty quickly especially if you focus on the endgame area and event quests. Your rank gets boosted once you beat Shara, and there's also points where you will have your ranked locked until you completed an assigned quest and then you'll receive a bump after finishing. I went from 49 > 54 and then 69 > 72. Just keep playing and it'll increase pretty quick.
MR is just like HR was, but for master rank quests only. The gear lock points are MR 50, 70, 100, and 200 (you get a ticket from the 200 quest). It doesn't take all that long to level up.

The way the gear lock actually works is that the guiding lands have a level cap for each region. It starts at level 4 (tempered T1 appear), then hitting MR 50 ups it to 5 (elders appear), MR 70 to 6 (unique monsters appear) and MR 100 to 7 (tempered T3 appear).

1 new monster appears at level 4 forest. 1 new monster can be lured in the guiding lands, 3 new monsters (and tempered version of earlier monster) appear at rank 6 desert, coral, and rotten (the tempered appears at rank 6 forest).

also tempered monsters in MR gives quite an HR point boost, so might want to play with tempers when you get there

The Guiding Lands is basically the end game.
It is unlockable after the Iceborne story line quest.
It is also where you will be farming for mats to upgrade your end game gear, as the gathering points and monsters there have a totally different loot table.
And it also unlocks some 'secret' monsters if you progress far enough.
Hope that helps!

Like HR, MR has some locks on its level that you need to beat Assignments to clear.

To explain why some gear is locked behind MR, the endgame Guiding Lands system has some extra monsters locked behind it, but many of those monsters require certain Region Levels in the Guiding Lands for you to discover them, and these Region Levels have MR requirements going up to MR 100 in order to get them all.

While one's mileage will vary depending on the quests they tackle, so far my typical goals of getting weapons and armor haven't outpaced my MR grind. I'm very close to MR 100 and I'm far from running out of things to do, so while it does take a lot of play, there's so much to do that you'll find yourself at MR 100 before you run out of tasks.

I barely took on much tempered monsters even in base MHW. I don't really like "bullet sponge bosses" if ya catch my drift? I prefer taking them on in a group, even though I know for certain it's easier solo.

Um tempers only have higher dmg, not hp
The only "bullet sponges" you are talking about is arch tempers, which only 2 different fights are nergs and xenos

I apologize I didn't know the tempered don't have high health, just high damage.
But yea, arch tempered are a no no for me.
