You are probably a die hard mh fan lol :P
That would just mean more and longer unskippable cutscenes I would have to wait for my friends to finish before we could do a quest together.
I don't think anyone plays MH for the story.
Imagine having a cutscene on ALL the monsters...
I mean, im not here for a love story, epic quest, or anything of the sort, just here for the title of the game, lol
nobody stops you from writing good fan lore.
There was already a mod with better discriptions for items.
The issue is mostly focus and the general thought that goes into the game. Monster Hunter stories work totally fine with the "monster is causing havoc, let's figure out what's up with that".
The issues are in certain aspects of presentation, like undue focus on characters the audience isn't too keen on (even though some of the characters in the story were very loveable) or creatures like Shara Ishvalda being admitted by the characters themselves just raised more questions.
If they cut down on Handler screentime in cutscenes and instead made the reasons why you're hunting individual monsters more interesting the story would've been plain and simply great. That's part of the reason why MH4's story is generally considered the best, a pandemic is a great setup, especially when compared to MHW constantly swapping between "kill this for research I guess" and "this monster's dangerous, kill it so our researchers can have some time to research".
I actually think the Rajang cutscenes were a great step forward in this department BTW. The characters are there but the monsters are the focus, and the Ecological Researcher actually explaining his studies on Shattered Horn went suuuch a long way to making that quest feel more memorable and better, instead of just being yet another "hunt this monster because we said so" quest.
Look at that tigrex that knocked me off a mountain and almost killed me in a game that doesn't even have fall damage... I'm going to become a hunter and kill it.
Did you need more story than that? Nope.
Oh this fake pro at the gathering hub is freaking annoying!... Do I have to talk to them? Nope.
Monster hunter world shoves that crap down your throat. But one thing I will give it credit for is making single player quests Co Op. In the other games, what we call assignments really weren't able to be done online, and our online and offline progress was separate. So yeah this guy has everything but the rainbow color because dual rajang is spreading those cheeks when your friends can't save you. Granted most of the offline quests weren't plagued by size variants that will just make you give up on the acceptance fee and reroll the monster. Nobody wants to fight a Gravois that can tail whip you from any side of a room, not to mention sleep/fire gas you as well as body check you the same way... God some of that G rank stuff was God awful.
Back on topic, monster hunter world forces that crap on us... and unfortunately, both of the characters they force on you are butt ugly and annoying. Then they tease you with the serious handler only to take her back in like 3 quests... C'mon...
The other monster hunter games have very little to no story guiding them. One example I can draw from this is MH Tri, where you have to save a small fishing village from being sunk by mysterious tremors. The narrative and story is so subtle, yet it nudges the gameplay along in a progressive manner by giving you bigger and more threatening challenges. By comparison, MHW has a lot more invested in its story but I get your point. The story COULD have been a bit better with World with perhaps a slightly more extended storyline inclusive of more quests. It's all relative- but the focus of the game is the hunt.
That being said, the Witcher crossover quest was really well done.
To me, it worked fine back in the days of oldschool jrpg's just having the sprites be emotive. Nowadays though with the more realistic graphics it's a hard sell for me. Just makes the main character seem like a cardboard cutout that people drag along with them to do the fighting bits.
It can still be done well, but it doesn't do the story any favors in the case of this game.
considering most people only play through the story i'd imagine a lot of people care
you could also buy monster hunter for the story if they wrote a better story
i don't know why people are against improving an aspect of the game
