Use screamer pods when it is underground
Bring Screamer Pods. When it burrows, fire a pod on the ground and it will get stunned.
Traps are very useful as well. Equip your palico with the flashfly gadget for free flash bombs and shock traps.
And try to eat for Defense (L). Having Health Boost and Divine Blessing skills will help too.
If you are new just focus on surviving the 1st part of the fight. Later he gets tired and gets his horns stuck in the walls, so even if you aren't using a blunt weapon you will have plenty of openings later in the fight to do some damage.
And so is Heavy Bow Gun with Shield mod.
If you want a weapon that is fun against Diablo, go for Long Sword:

While Defender Gear would help the OP, they asked for tips on fighting it, not "I desperately need to kill this and I'm stuck". Suggesting they use crutch gear in this context is almost insulting.
Anyway, plenty of others have already pointed out the screamer pod factor but there's a few other things:
-Respect the charge. When Diablos charges at you, go on the defensive to avoid getting hit by it. Diablos is the first monster in the game that REALLY forces you to respect some of its attacks in this way.
-Respect the burrow, if you can't interrupt it with a screamer pod. The best solution is superman diving away from it, if you aren't using a weapon that can block it outright. (If you're unaware what that is, a "superman dive" is when, while "panic sprinting" away from a monster, you evade away from the monster. This causes a long dive that you're invincible for the majority of that's great for avoiding seemingly unavoidable attacks)
-Diablos' weakest general areas are the legs and underside, so you'll find it quite easy to get big damage in during those windows you do get to deal it.
1. Pick a leg and tenderize it with clutch claw or if it's already tenderized skip to number 2.
2. Go for his legs.
3. Don't get hit.
It's extremely simple and straight forward. Once you learn his moves, their start up animations, their ranges, when to block and when not to block, when to evade out of the way and when to evade past or even into Diablos, etc you can branch off with other weapons.
But with SNS, your only plan is to go for his legs, and to try and not get hit. I'm not saying this like a "uh hit it until it dies and dont die lol gottem" post. This is legitimately how I learned Diablos back in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.
It still works and it probably always will work. No need to get fancy until you know you can pull fancy off.
SNS's big brother Lance turns Diablos into an actual joke, the only exception being a REALLY REALLY PISSED OFF Tempered Black Diablos with his wonky hitboxes you sometimes can't possibly avoid because of walls and him seemingly hitting you from behind even though there was legit no way he could have done so with that attack you thought you were blocking.
Ignore Diablos's tail completely, just don't even worry about it. It's a waste of time to go after it until you need it's carve for whatever reason. His double tail swipe move is so telegraphed and obvious after a few times you will know the exactly area of effect of that move so much so that you can go right past it and go for the main plan, his legs. His tail spin move should almost never hit you and leaves him wide open for your main plan, can you guess what it is? His legs.
On mounts, if his legs are not tenderized and you are confident enough you can get the second claw, go for his leg with the claw and then attack his leg.
On knockouts, if his legs are not tenderized and you are confident enough you can get the second claw, go for his leg with the claw and then attack his leg.
On tired status, if his legs are not tenderized and you are confident enough you can get the second claw, go for his leg with the claw and then attack his leg.
On wallbangs, you get the idea, tenderize his legs and hit his legs.
Basically, go for his leg, ignore every other part of Diablos as a SNS user. That is until you know the fight better.
I doubt you are using SNS in world because almost no one does, but just incase you like the weapon on some offchance, just giving my two cents.
And if you see bad damage numbers on his legs, tenderize and continue going for his legs.
The plan changes for black diablos a little but it's still the same principal with SNS. His legs.
Legs.
Legs.
Legs.
Also, poison really helps eat his hp since he runs around so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ much and is out of reach a lot while you learn how he fights. Pukei's SNS should work wonders for learning Diablos. Don't worry about how long it takes, just worry about learning the fight with the safety and mobility of the weapon you have and the extremely simple mission you have.
If you use range weapons, aiming for the root of the tail or the wings. If you're using Light Bowgun, let the mines take care of the horns, as it attacks mainly with horns and will trip the mines on its own and break them all by itself. If you're using Heavy Bowgun, Sticky the face.
Lance or Great Swords will give you easy access to the tail shaft.
Cat with Trap sub wpn work wonders if you want it to stay still. Bring Shock Trap yourself too. Just make sure you don't like it to burst out from under the trap, as it will destroy the trap instead of trapping the monster.
You do not have to attack all the time. If you do not know when there is an opening, wait until you see one. Trying to attack when you aren't sure there is an opening usually leads to you taking damage, which then leads to you running away and chugging health potions; and during this time where you trying to get back to full health, there was an opening where you could have got some hits in. Instead you were healing or trying to get to a safe distance, and by the time you've finished; the monster has recovered and is attacking again, waiting for you to be an idiot and get hit again so that you can miss the next opening too.
Be patient, especially against stuff like Diablos. You get away with flailing like a madman against a few monsters but generally its a bad idea. Against Diablos is a REALLY bad idea.
Alternatively play Lance and counter-everything.
