Development has stopped long ago so don't expect/ask for anything to change at all. Either do what I said in the previous paragraph or get this crown mod[www.nexusmods.com] to make everything spawn at tiny or gigantic size.
There are many reasons to hate Capcom for their asinine game design choices and you picked the one that is completely optional? Geez, and I used to think I was nitpicky. Did you even deal with the decoration system yet?
you could also use one of the nexus mods which cranks up the spawnratio to 50%small50% big
There were crown hunting sections in the early stage of the game on gathering hub discord
you could check them out, if there are still a few beginners aiming for this achievement, it is always easier in groups
chances are maybe higher in at nergi hunts or the thronetaker both are event quests
Investigations as mentioned, are the best way to get elder dragon crowns unfortunately. If you have a friend, you can try crown sniping with them for a higher chance.
You can also use the mods provided here if you end up losing your mind with this mess. No one is gonna blame you. I did them legitmately with 2 other friends, but i wont lie to you, the crown mods are way too tempting to pass. I kinda regret not using them, thanks to my stubborn ass.
Wish you luck on the crown journey, i took a long break afterwards, i suggest you do the same or you will really end up hating the game.
I had been there so i know how you feel, as far i know there is nothing you can do except trying over and over, unless you want the easy way by using mod (Not blaming you if you use it, i remember i spent like legit nearly 300 hours just to get the crown for all monsters, so yeah it's not worth it imo).
The other painful achievement is collecting all 10 treasures from all regions, at least you "kinda" have a bit of fun hunting down monsters but this one is so damn repetitive and boring as hell since what you do is to keep swapping places for hundreds of time because the treasure hint itself *surprise surprise* is also ♥♥♥♥♥♥ RNG.
Btw almost the entirety of this game is based on RNG, since it's the core of the game..
Crossing my fingers that we will have something to at least reliably determine the monsters size other than measuring or guessing in MH6. Either through the use of a special item, like hunting binoculars or a final extra research level that unlocks the monster size after collecting enough tracks and investigating/hunting the monster enough times idk.
I honestly don't mind reloading the quest over and over because I find that it can be relaxing in a weird way. However, the act of checking and measuring the monster and having to decide whether to hunt it or not is where the true pain lays.
