Legiana
I'm new to this game. Is it possible to kill Legiana alone? The quest says "waiting for players" but nobody seems to be joining. Tried it alone and fainted. Would like to know if I'm wasting my time or not.

Now that you're here, I'd also like to ask about these items. Do I have to buy them or collect them while hunting the monster? So far I've only been using potions to gain health but that's it.
Most items can be foraged or crafted. The only things you really need to purchase are Trap Tools, and that's if you want to trap a monster instead of slay, and Astera Jerky.

In terms of what you should have:
Amass potions and mega potions, that's obvious. I'd recommend growing them with Botanical Research in Astera.

Nullberries can instantly remove any of the many blights you're going to be afflicted with, so it's always a good idea to keep them on hand.

I'd recommend crafting some Nutrients and Mega Nutrients. They can increase your max health, which is useful in longer hunts where you cart.

If you combine Mega Nutrients with some other ingredients, you will obtain Mega Potions. Mega Potions will instantly restore 100% of your health, and even expand it to its maximum capacity.

I'd recommend obtaining a lot of Flash Pods: They are incredibly useful in base Monster Hunter World, and while they become less useful as time goes on, you can still use them to interrupt particularly dangerous attacks.

Carry a full set of Astera Jerky. There's a fight coming up that you may need them for, and they instantly recover all of your recoverable (AKA the part of your health that turns red after you're hit) HP.

It's a good idea to carry traps against enemies who can be trapped. Trapping ends the fight sooner, and gives you more resources for a successful capture. You do need to constantly purchase traps, but they offer potentially greater returns for successfully capturing monsters. All monsters except a slight few can be captured, so I'd recommend using them. (They can also be used to stun a monster mid-fight temporarily if you need it, but they are stunned for shorter periods of time on consecutive traps).

There are a lot more items you will need as time goes on, but this should be all you really need to get through base World.

That's a very comprehensive list! Then only item that I would add to this list is the farcaster. These are extremely useful for the AT elders. Not so much for the base content though.

Some items can be bought, but most need materials you can grab while hunting monsters. (or just do an expedition by opening the map and travelling to a zone to get materials)

There's also the Botanical Research you'll unlock that essentially lets you "farm" consumable materials automatically between hunts.

I personally recommend that you try to go through the Crafting List and try to craft every combination on there at least once. (this is of course a longer-term goal so don't feel pressured to do it right now. just crack open your item box and try to craft what you can with what items you've found so far, and keep grabbing new items to discover new combinations) You'll discover a lot of interesting, weird stuff to try out on your hunts. (and a select few, like Smoke Bombs and Poison Smoke Bombs, are legitimately very useful items that barely anyone bothers to use)

I'll explain a few notable items for future reference: (dangit, just as I post this I get ninja'd by someone else who made a list! whatever, I think this is still useful so I'll keep it up xP)

Traps/Tranq Bombs: Used to capture monsters. Fight the monster as usual until most of their health is gone (if they're limping when trying to get away from you, or have a skull icon coming off them on the map, that's the signal) you need to hit them with two tranq bombs and catch them in a trap. (not necessarily in that order. they just need to be trapped and have had two tranq bombs hit them recently. Also note that Traps REQUIRE Trap Tools to make, which can ONLY be bought from the shop. they're one of the few consumables you can't get purely by gathering and need to buy those components with money)

Capturing monsters is faster and easier than killing them (you can do it once they hit less than 10% of their health, so you're skipping roughly 10% of the fight) and gives you 4 extra materials in the rewards screen instead of the usual 3 extra materials from carving them. It takes a little practice and setup to pull this off but is well worth it, especially for the Quests that specifically ask you to capture the monster in question.

Nulberries: Negates all Blights you're currently afflicted with. Not all status effects necessarily, but stuff like being on fire. Many annoying status effects like Iceblight will take a while to wear off if you don't bring these. (related to these are Antidotes/Herbal Medicine to cure poison, Astera Jerky to cure bleeding, and Energy Drink to cure sleep)

Flash Pods: As people have explained, these are slinger pods that down airborne monsters. Specifically, they work like flashbang shots and inflict blindness on monsters that have their eyes directly exposed to the flash (much like Tzitzi Ya Ku). Blindness not only stops monsters from seeing your location and forces them to attack wildly trying to guess your positioning, but also makes any airborne monsters fall to the ground.

Max/Ancient Potions: Alternative healing items that restore all your health, and instantly instead of going through the whole drinking animation. Tougher to make than ordinary potions and you can only carry 2 Max and 1 Ancient Potion at once, though.

Dash Juice: Temporarily makes Stamina regenerate much faster and get used up much less from stamina consuming activities. Amazing for stamina-intensive weapons like Bow/Dual Blades but also pretty handy for general use.

Lifepowder/Dust of Life: Healing items that heal up all your allies, not just yourself. Will be very much appreciated in multiplayer.

Demondrug/Armorskin: Drink these, and you get a small Attack/Defense boost for the rest of the hunt. Fantastic for making life just a little bit easier.

Farcaster: Instantly takes you to the nearest camp. Initially seems worthless, BUT this works even in combat, so if you bump into a monster you'd rather not fight, you can instantly leave with no hassle. Plus, these allow you to retreat and restock items in situations like boss arenas where you usually can't run back to camp, or escape combat if you're in a really bad situation and are about to get killed.

Cold/Hot Drinks: Some environmental areas later on in the game have hazardously hot/cold temperatures, these drinks negate the negative effects of those temperatures. (volcanic heat slowly drains health, arctic cold makes max stamina drain much faster) These items can be made with materials that grow abundantly near the entrances to these hazardous areas, thankfully.

A good Health potion tip if you do struggle with a monster in the future is this.
Have 10 mega potions. Have them on your radial menu.
Carry 10 potions and 10 honey in your item slot.
Equip the mega potion combo card onto your radial menu too.

BAM. You now have 20 mega potions for your hunt ready to go.

op, while you're crafting all these good items, and mining every ore, and picking every bone up, and you might not need many bones or ore

dont forget the ELDER MELDERRrrrrr

she can consume materials or items you don't have a use for, and give you items you want, without consuming your catalysts required for health restoration items.

like mega demondrug. shock traps. etc.

if you dont need the zenny, consider letting the elder melder have the spare mats.
