Monster Hunter: World
is it worth for pure single player?
As the title explains, is this game worth it if I play exclusively single player? Also, does single player imply I'm running my own local instance, or is it all hosted through a regional server (which may mean lag for me, as I live in Taiwan).

Yes. I play 90% solo and it's a great game when you're on your own. I actually recommend going at least through campaign alone, since it's a much more effective learning experience. There are a few post game monsters balanced for a full team, but nothing that important. They will actually make one of them scale to solo players in December.

You can choose to join someone else's session or create your own private one with your PC as server.

The game is entirely soloable aside from 2 siege fights and a few crossover quests, but the sieges are receiving solo scaling relatively soon.

As for how connection is handled, you are prompted to either join or create a session upon selecting your character, and you shouldn't lag within your own quests as you are technically hosting them. The only time you can ever experience lag is if you're joining someone else's quest where the connection between you and the host is spotty.

That said, the lag you'd experience wouldn't rubberband, or at least it's never done that for me. The game is quick to force a disconnect if someone isn't in sync with the others participating. If it's just you and you joined someone elses hunt the other 3 will be uneffected. If it's the host everyone in the party is effected. If it's the host of a lobby they will DC and someone else will be made the host, but if their connection is bad as well it could DC the entire lobby.

If this happens mid-quest the monster running in place, unable to move and any damage done to it won't really effect its health, but it's a pretty seamless process. After the disconnect you default to the host of the hunt, the other player(s) disappear and the monsters health % is brought back to solo-levels so you can finish the hunt still with whatever % of damage everyone had already dealt.

All in all, the servers are pretty stable and the people you see complaining are more than likely to have issues on their end than the other way around. DCs aren't common if your connection is stable, but like any online game other factors such as regional settings and latency can also pose an issue. Either way, the lag or connection issues won't get in the way if you're playing solo.
no, because the story suck.

Yes. Many people, myself included, think that solo play offers the best experience. This is fortunate, as in my experience the game is prone to constant disconnects.
As a new player, i have so far only played solo and noticed no issues at all in terms of latency or lag, as for a play experience i'm enjoying it, recently unlocked high rank monsters and the challenge is decent now.
The game runs a local instance, so lag isn't an issue.

It's absolutely worth to buy for solo only as the overwhelming majority of the game's content is designed to be solo-compatible.
Great to hear. I avoided the game mostly because of the impression it was mostly multiplayer. Now I realise it's pretty much the opposite

You're kidding, right?

Yes! However, I recommend playing it first and make full use of the refund policy.

Play for less than 2 hours then decide.

Skip the character creator.

Watch some videos on the interface or just to see how people start quests etc before you buy and try.

If before 2 hours is up and you don't like it, just refund.

If you like it then start a new character or continue with the existing one.

I've seen this before, but this is a good tip for new potential hunters.
Also, check out the game play videos as well!

I agree with the sentiment, but if I had followed this advice, without question I would have refunded what has become my favourite game of the last few years. Monster Hunter has systems within systems within systems, and it doesn't do a good job of explaining any of them. Unfortunately 2 hours isn't even close to enough time to really find a weapon you gel with, much less wrap your head around the rest of what MHW brings to the table.

That's why steam should, at the least, extend the deadline for MHW new players.
At least, thats my thought on it.
Idk how it came to be nor why its 2 hours only
Dont worry too much about lagging. I played almost the entirety of mhw base game while living in Taiwan including the hardest end game content (some of which doesnt scale to single player) in both single and multiplayer. You can even play the game while offline, which is what i did on my gaming laptop when one of the typhoon hit awhile back.
