That's actually wrong. Orange number basically means you do full damage and that it isn't reduced, or something like that. Charge blade, when buffed, does orange number with the buff's damage, yet this damage is unaffected by crits, but that's not all, for example a hammer user using WEX against Vaal will only trigger WEX when hitting the Vaal's skull once it is broken, not before. The in game informations are really inaccurate when you dig a bit. That and by experience you can tell when WEX is active or not by the number of crits you do. Pretty sure my CB doesn't have WEX active at all time against Nergigante even though there are orange numbers.
Now that's just by memory so it may be inaccurate, but my CB build has -5% affinity, WEX pulls me to 45%, if I hit Nergi's horns without spikes, my sword (buff or unbuffed) never crtits, but it has orange numbers. If I hit the tail or front legs though, it does while also having orange numbers.
But orange numbers aren't weak spots. That's the thing, orange numbers are just telling you you're hitting a spot that's not resistant to damage. The game never tells you where weakspots are.
Exept they're not. Re read my examples, if you hit a Vaal's skull with a hammer, you'll get orange number but you will not crit with WEX. It'll crit once the skull is broken because it then becomes a weakness. Same for nergi, you can hit the head with a charge blade, get orange number but will not crit either with WEX, where hitting the tail or front leg will trigger WEX because these are weakpoints unlike the head.
MHW is terrible at explaining because it oversimplifies every mechanic, from monster's weaknesses to weapon's fonction.
This is because your sharpness also factors into things. Having very high(typically white) sharpness and striking a 40% hitzone could produce an orange number for example, but you wouldn't get any bonus affinity from weakness exploit despite it being orange. You can also end up getting grey hits on even 70-80% hitzones, like the training pillar, by letting your sharpness drop to extremely low levels.
I don't have precise numbers for when sharpness will turn a grey output into an orange one, but it is apparent that sharpness plays into it. -pulled off reddit seems to fully address both your concerns
I failed to understand Leoscar exemple because when i hit Vaal's head(non broken) with crit coming only from weakness exploit i see some crit(orange and star)...not sure how it's related with his exemple.
Try again?
Ranged weapons apparently won't crit with WEX on the horns, however melee seems fine.
7:04 cuz Steam won't allow me to set the timer.
