As someone who was in a similar situation playing MHW, I advise that you have them both play the next fight at the same time (assuming they're both avaliable to play at the same time). Who you join will probably have to be decided, either helping out whoever's most likely to potentially fail the quest or alternating between them both. As long as you're all on Discord or some similar platform you can keep up a conversation during the fights and still have fun.
Either that, and/or play with them seperately depending on when they're avaliable. Eg. Get one of your pals to a new monster and help them beat it, then when your other friend is avaliable all 3 of you can play together against that one.
The main goal though is to get them invested enough to play the game outside of the Assignments, which is when you can actually do some full-blown multiplayer.
Unfortunately that also kind of scuppers my plan to start a new character but I guess I can always just unequip my existing one.
Thanks for the help!
Yes, you can also do that. After watching the cutscene once, you're good.
As for the potential of starting a new character, you have two options:
-Go into hunts equipping appropriate gear with your old character
-Or, finish the hunts or watch the next monster intro in advance, before your friends get to said monster. This is what I did on my first playthrough and it worked out decently.
