IG burns through sharpness regardless of if you're jumping or not.
Anyway, the sharpness issue can be solved by a lategame ability called Master's Touch (a staple of the game's most popular builds) that makes it so critical hits don't consume any Sharpness. There are also certain Insect Glaives like Nergigante's that have massive amounts of Sharpness.
There are other ways you could try managing it, such as by fishing for Whetfish scales.
The saving grace of the Glaive is mostly the Kinsect itself, being able to get things like passive team heals, additional status effect procs, bonus damage, and even monster KOs/clutch tail cuts is something none of the other melee weapons can really do.
I also add sharpness problems with Lance, went with LunaXeno lance, made things much more bearable. For IG, Drachen armor is actually quite good too.
I hope you were talking about Empress Cane "Ruin" and not Catastrophe's Light.
This is true, but by default I'd rather recommend actual gear than the Defender weapons.
Objectively the Defender glaive is better than Catastrophe's Light but saying "Just use this crutch gear" comes off as condescending. I'll make the assumption that the OP would rather use the standard equipment.
