How does weapon transmog work?

Could i theoretically transmog my hideous Safi HH into a Stygian Nergi HH?

I know armor transmog exists both as a mod and ingame, downloaded a mod because there is no layered Pukei Pukei MR armor, was dissapointed because i spent a lot of time in grinding lands, anything similar?

if you are talking about the official non-mod way, it works by getting parts from Guiding Lands (usually the tempered version of the monster) and some other gathering node items and it will allow you to turn any weapon into either a custom combination of weapon parts or a unique skin (eg. The stygian zinogre weapon). Unlike layered armors, MR weapon skins are available.

I don't use mods so I don't know how the mod will work but I am sure they will have some explanation or description on how it works at where you download it. I imagine it should work the same but without the resources/effort.

but if you talk about stygian zinogre you can transmog your safi HH into a stygian HH. you just need tempered dragonholds and a great spiritvein gem.

Yeah i meamt stygian zino, i was just hunting nergi s lot so i confused myself. I figured it out at this point but thank you anyway!

all weapon styles are available as layered. includeing mr ones. stygian weapons require 1 tempered dragonhold (tempered guiding lands stygian requires lvl 7 tundra region to spawn) and 1 gsg (any tempered t3 monster in guiding lands.) both require mr 100 to obtain. cannot be obtained before mr 100.

I use both layered weapon and mod. Sometimes the modders put their mods on weapons that I don’t use so I just install their mod and use layered weapon to change the model of my weapon to their mods. When in-game layered weapon was not a thing, I had to do this through changing the file name of the mod to match the weapon that I was using but now I don’t need to do this.
