Also, bring mega-nutrients and mandragora in your pouch to craft more Max potions on the fly. It's much faster to eat than potions.
What are the buffs that Canteen food can provide?
Meat generally provide Attack buffs, e.g: 6 x meat gives Attack up (L)
Fish gives Defence buff
Vegetable gives Resistance buff
Then there are useful specifics (required Canteen voucher to give 100% activation - this is what voucher supposed to be used for).

The two I used most of the time is:
Felyne Moxie - Prevents fainting one time when the HP is above 40-50. (If you were unsure, just pick HEALTHY FOOD from the list of food options).
Felyne Black Belt - Reduce Stamina depletion by 20%. Useful for stamina required weapon such as DualBlade and Bow.
There's up to +50 from buffs like the canteen, Hunting Horn, Nutrients, Max/Ancient Potions, and up to +50 from Health Boost. It never goes higher.
