P.S: Don't get used to flash pods. They're almost worthless in MR.
You can still get low lvl decorations in Iceborne hunts, so there's no need to grind for them specifically while in base game. There's also an event quest in base game that gives you tons of low lvl decorations anyway, so if you really need decos, you can just do that.
I'd say harder. There's more focus on status ailments and elemental resistance, so you have to wear gears that counter the monster (i.e. high ice resist, or blight resist skill for ice monsters) if you want an easier time in Iceborne.
There's no need to grind gear in base game, but it definitely helps. I say this for a few reasons:
1. A lot of weapons require you to craft them using base game materials before you can upgrade them to master rank level, so grinding for a few in base game will help later on.
2. All the charms require you to craft them in their lowest level first, which require base game materials..
3. Hunting the monster several times to grind for materials will help you learn their moveset, which will help when you face subspecies of that monster later on (in both base game and in Iceborne).
That being said, use whatever you want for base game. Just make sure to learn the monster patterns so you don't pick up a bad habit of tanking hits and exchanging blows.
MR can ONLY be gained from master rank quests.
So... kinda connected?
It makes for an easy way to spot cheaters. If you ever spot someone with a higher MR than their HR, they're definitely a cheater.
They're still very useful against flying wyverns like Rathalos/Rathian that can sometimes refuse to come down, so long as you only use them sparingly
