If he hasn't been damaged enough beforehand he'll simply do the sapphire star move right away and nuke the entire team.
You can survive the blast by using a farcaster, though it's unlikely that everyone manages to use them in time.

Ah I thought that was still a possibility. Then it's simply a means to end the run if the dps wasn't high enough. It could also be related to the amount of staggers done or whether or not he's been aggroed a lot.
its a bit of a learning process but its possible to avoid that BS. a simple fix would be to make that attack animation from start to finish unflinching.
