Are gems and decorations permanent?
I'm HR 43 now and I figure it's as good a time as any to start using gems and decorations. I've got no idea what gems or decos are actually worth using, but my more immediate question is if I can add them to a piece of armour or weapon, and then remove and re-add as I see fit? Once I start giving a ♥♥♥♥ about using different weapons and builds, I would hate to find out that a certain gem or deco is no longer available because I put it on something else that I no longer use.

Gems are decorations. And yes, you slot them in, you take them out, you slot them into something else. No cost, no complications.

If it doesn't go into your on hunt pouch, its permanent.

As said above, they don't require anything to be used, and can be used any times you want. As to which ones you should get, It all depends on what your weapon is, what armor set you are using and what your general playstyle is. I would recommend searching for guides or builds online, curated by people who know how to build.
Good luck!

Another note - you can slot them in 1 set, save the loadout (start button for me on controller) then make a diff set, and slot the same gems in that one (i mean take them out of the old set and put them on the new one) and save that loadout -
By switching loadouts, it'll automatically put in the gems as you had saved.

For ex. Loadout a) has Kulve gauntlets with an attack gem. - Loadout b you took it out for xeno jiiva gauntlets and added it in, and saved it. Now, switching...the attack gem will be in both, for the same one gem. (so you don't need hundreds of raaaare as heck gems to make a full setup every time).

Hope i explained it well. And just in case - 3 slot can hold only 1 gem, same with 2..only 1 gem per slot, however, a 3 slot can do a 3-2-1, 2 can do a 2 or 1, and 1...obviously a 1.

The only way you will lose gems is if you:

1) sell armor/weapons that have gems in them
2) Try to do the exploit that used to result in duplicating decorations

You can avoid #2 by only using armor presets inside a mission.

Just be careful when you meld. Melded decorations go away forever.

You also don't need extras for every different set. You can swap around slotted decorations into other gear and have them safely saved in a loadout and it'll automatically switch them out.
