i already deleted all cap investigation for certain monster because it always ended in same scenario "accidently killed" or you waste 5 extra min by playing super safe while wasting lots of traps.
@op In grinding land it is even better to cap, if you need normal rewards, but it is still hard to cap goldi or silver, normally killed by accident, while carving grants gl materials.
Iceborne DLC, you need to be at least MR 70 to encounter her. drop some of the best weapons for a lot of categories.
I'll just straight up say capturing and carving pull items from the same item pool
They're the same, except you get 4 carve rewards for capturing the monster
Here is how you get maximum rewards:
1: Do an investigation for the target monster
2: Break every part and cut/carve the tail when possible
3: Capture the monster
4: Bring the Palico with Plunderblade
Given what OP was specifically talking about Surspikes are carved from the tail AND available as investigation rewards. So there is no reason to kill the monster, if you're purely after a Surspike your best option is to cut/carve the tail then capture it to end the hunt faster.
PSA: 'Rewards' in the Hunter's Notes are for QUEST REWARDS, capture rewards ARE NOT the same thing, they use the same reward table as Carves, difference is, you get 1-2 more materials for capturing.
Stop telling people to not capture for reward related reasons.
Rewards are the same no matter what, quit ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ when you understand how the game works 🙄 yall act like this ♥♥♥♥ hasn't been out for a while now, this ain't news to anyone but you apparently. We're not playing the old school games anymore kiddo
I play on console and your like those people who want Greatswords and such to go for only the tail when in a group hunt, but at the same time most of base game and iceborne give me those materials when I capture a monster. Also I've gotten lucky enough through out all my time fighting Gold Rathian to capture it and end the hunt with 2-4 surspikes including the ones I manage to break off. So I'll continue capturing them as much as I use weapons that can cut off tails on where ever I please thank you very much.
I'll concede that, tho I think it would still be ideal to beat the monster to one inch of its life and capture. I don't know if there are thresholds for GL shinies like for the slinger ammo drops, If that's the case one could actually do it ;)
If you need Surspikes, the best is to forget about Capture or Slay but actually do some Gold Rath investigation.
To increase your chance of obtaining surspikes, you really should break Gold Rathian's back (30% reward chance). Pitfall traps would help you on this.
Curving the tail (after you slice it off) is also a possible option, but since its only 10% so its less attractive.
This week's Event Quest contains Gold Rath, so for those do not have investigations, this is your chances.
