Augmentation vs. Custom Upgrades
So I was maxing out a Rarity 11 weapon and was wondering. Should i use Attack Augmentation and Affinity custom upgrades? Or Affinity Augmentation and Attack custom Upgrades?
Does one of either ways grant better overall stats than the other?

Custom Upgrades are a very minor bonus for weapons that don't have unique models, Augmentations are way stronger. It's difficult to compare them in the way you're presenting. (Custom Upgrades also don't consume Augment slots, so it's not one or the other)

Generally speaking Affinity is better UNTIL your build reaches 100% total Affinity, at which point more Affinity is pointless.

However, Affinity is a lot easier to get via Skills than Attack is, so most optimal builds choose to rely on Skills to max their Affinity and Augments/Custom Upgrades to increase attack.

Speaking as a more casual player though, +10% Affinity for 2 Augment slots is cheap and a pretty good deal, so I generally go for it. Custom Augment Affinity I generally avoid because of the uneven number weirdness it causes, but that's just a petty personal thing.

Hmm iirc, the custom mods for ATK and AFF only increase the stat by 1 single point.
And I think you can only have max 5 custom mods across, regardless which you choose.
If you add custom mod for ATK x 3, you will only have x 2 custom mods left for AFF.
Give it a try, you can roll them back. You will get the materials back but you'll lose research points.

For me personally, I augmented my Kadachi HBG with Affinity and with full ATK custom mods.

I guess it depends if you can reach 100% Affinity or not with your particular weapon. It's only a tiny boost, up to +5% Affinity or god knows how much Attack, to me I would always go Affinity for more mileage but I dunno, it probably differs based on the weapon itself I.E if you're using a Sticky based LBG, Affinity is worthless.

That +5% Affinity doesn't sound like much but it ends up being a lot on some weapons, especially those with natural high Affinity anyway. I have basically no experience with custom mods, but with Affinity augments and the +5% Affinity from custom mods I was able to have a base Affinity of 40% on a certain weapon, which became 80% resting once I applied Critical Eye 7, etc.

Then it would be trivial to combo something like Weakness Exploit or Agitator with it, I guess.

On the few R11 weapons I have augmented / customised, I've always rolled Health Regen + Affinity + Defence augments, and then +5% Affinity on top of that with custom stuff. I'm also not a very smart individual and don't have the big brain 200IQ strats, I just mostly play casual, so feel free to disregard all of the above.

Custom upgrades give you, from what i’ve seen atleast, 1 more true raw (i think) or 1% more affinity, 10 more elemental damage / status buildup or 10 (?) more defense they really don’t have a massive impact in general you can do them along side augmentations but they’re not a huge increase in damage output or even defense at all

Augmentations are way better. You get i’m not sure how much but way more true raw, 10% more affinity on the first upgrade and 5% more on each following upgrade, and you can get the defense augmentation which actually doesn’t suck because it gives you an actual divine blessing like hidden skill that procs seperately from divine blessing. And you can also get slot upgrades and most importantly health regen. If you’re new especially, I recommend you get atleast one health regen on your weapon unless if you’re playing spread bowgun or bow.

What weapon are you using anyway?

People used to say Attack was better if you were below 400 true raw, otherwise Affinity.

That was back in Low and High Rank though, I don't have a clue if the same still holds true in Master Rank, I'd also imagine most Master Rank weapons go beyond 400 true raw now anyway, so maybe the value has moved up a bit or something, I dunno.

My smoothbrain has always valued Affinity over Attack no matter what, though. If Attack was a % increase, say each custom Attack upgrade granted +1%, ending with +5% if you stacked them (basically like free Non-Elemental Boost) I'd definitely prefer Attack over Affinity then, etc.

Me Hammer user, man. Unga bunga! Grug? Me know big number is better when boosted by % instead of static value. Grug!

Custom augments are mostly for looks.
Affinity certainly isn't worth the mats.

What "looks"? You just cycle through different variations of ugly Ore / Bone weapons, right? In most cases the weapons I do want to custom augment end up looking worse than they did before the upgrades were applied in the first place :steammocking:

"No one is forcing you to use the system" I know but +5% Affinity! I feel like a dweeb if I don't have my weapon set up to its full potential, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are Namielle weapons the most ugliest thing I've ever seen. Bah! Baaah!

The Acidic Glavenus Great Sword.

So I think I have a good choice now: With Crit Eye 7 and Attack 4 I have 45% Crit Chance. WEX 3 makes it 95% on tenderized weakspots. So I was only missing 5% to reach 100%.

With 2 Extra Slots augmented I now have 6 Augmentation Slots on the weapon. I put in one Attack Augment (3 points) and one Health Augment (3 Slots). For custom Upgrades I went with 5 times Affinity to get the missing 5%. For the 6th custom upgrade I was only given one choice, the Zorah Attack+, which fitted in well.

Weapon is ugly now, but whatever.

You could go with affinity custom upgrades for 5% more. And then grab 2 health regen or 1 health regen and 2 defense.

Well, I do like my greater girros SnB with Namiel skin.

And I've played MH games ever since MHFU, so I'll leave chasing the meta to noobs leeching yt builds and speed runners and go with what I like for fun - at the end, I'm still doing well better then your meta build casual who can't even dodge roars.

Did you just brag about doing better than casual scrubs? Wow, congratulations on that achievement.

No, I'm bashing meta chasers for min maxing to have all the damage in the world, but carting all the time due to not being able to use that damage properly.
