Hammers are blunt, Blunt = no cutting for you.
However, if you carry boomerangs (found in the shop) with you, you can bash the tail with the Hammer then throw a boomerang to cut it off.
I don't bother doing this often since I usually have someone with a blade, but I generally just keep hittimg the tail until the hunt is almost over and give the boomerang a few tries.
I suggest you to just stick with investigation if you need tails, they gives you alot for reward.

Good question sharpness in MH didn't really mean sharp it just a terms for dmg type .
It cuts.. that is what you need
