Save game error (FIXED!!!!!!!!)
So my boyfriend got Iceborne, and reinstalled the whole game. When he launched it, the game told him that there was no compatible save game available, and asked if he wanted to start a new file. Of course he doesn't. Has anyone found a fix for this?

Ah, theres the issue then maybe. You want to use the steam ID from your back up file, not the one you downloaded. So you load up your file first, copy the steam ID, then load up the downloaded file and overwrite it's steam ID with the one you took from your file. If the steam ID of the file and your account don't match, it won't load.

SAVEDATA1000 is in fact correct. I'm surprised it even let you get to a black screen with the wrong ID though, mine didn't. Maybe it's cause mine was actually invalid as opposed to just not the correct ID.

It doesn't work.

When I import the backup I get this error https://puu.sh/EYltz/605b3ed017.png and the numbers on the backup save are absurd, like negative 140k reputation. :/

I think thats what happens if you load up an iceborne file in the tool. It must use some other kind of encryption. Presumably your back up was overwritten. I know when I checked a fresh iceborne file all 3 slots where like -3 billion HR and funds and it gave me that error. Trying to load that file in game after that just crashed it without giving me an error message.

Was your back up the automatic one the game makes in the savedata_backup folder or a manual one you made? If it was the automatic one and you don't have a manual one, you're probably out of luck.

The backup was Automatic. I used the basic one and I can rename it and I guess use the free character redesign to get my old toon back.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Capcom are a joke with this. We waited months for this disaster. I sent them a ticket, we'll see what they can do.

He must follow this to the tee. It took me a bit but I recovered my character with his small guide. Make sure he is using his steam ID line since that messed me up there.

We got it closer, we think. Did you have the iceborne dlc enabled or disabled when you got it to work?

Currently the game just crashes while trying to load the save now, rather than it complaining that it's incompatable

What did you do to fix the crashing issue? I thought I followed all those instructions, but whenever I launch it just crashes once it starts to load the save. Any tips? Thanks for the help.

I recovered my character by unofficial way.
I am not responsible for any problems that may arise from following this method.

If you have initialized the save file, or if the modified date of the save file is today, this method may not work. The modified date of my save file was September 15, 2018.

1. backup and copy your old save data from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[????]\582010\remote or https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=582010
2. download MHWSaveTransfer from https://www.nexusmods.com/monsterhunterworld/mods/751?tab=files
3. download normal save data from https://www.nexusmods.com/monsterhunterworld/mods/1886?tab=files
I will move my character to this file.
4. run MHWSaveTransfer
5. File - Open SaveData - Select normal save data in step 3
6. Change SteamID to yours. The number in your profile page address url is your SteamID.
7. File - Import Save Data - Select your old save data in step 1
8. Use drag and drop to move your character to the left.
9. File - Save SaveData - Save file to any directory and copy to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[????]\582010\remote
10. run game
11. Since the settings have been initialized, and errors related to keyboard settings may occur. You need to reset the settings. You need to change language setting first and reset the settings. (tip: Ja = yes)
12. done.
i haven't played since 2018 and this recovered my safe file ! thank you! i had to wait a minute for the game to give me a prompt to reset my keyboard settings.
Ryuu 10 ENE 2020 a las 15:17

If you've already hit Create new Save file, it WILL over-ride your old cloud backup. Once you hit that, that's it. You've lost your backup save. Importing saves at the moment does not work with the iceborne DLC added either.
Macha 11 ENE 2020 a las 6:25
Correct. You NEED to backup your save file BEFORE you click Create New Save, or instead of creating a new save.

Hi. Just a question if any of you here have the same problem as I did. I started playing MHW:Iceborne yesterday evening until MR8 if I remember correctly. Everything was in order until I tried to login again today and found out my save file is back to before the whole Iceborne stuff started. I was sure I saved especially before quitting. Hope to hear some opinion from you guys

Perhaps it saved the data to the wrong location. Try searching your computer for "SAVEDATA1000" and see if you can find one anywhere aside from a folder path ending in /remote.

Oh another possibility is that you lost internet briefly and MHW decided to save it locally instead of to the cloud. If that is the case there will be a save data in local instead of remote.

Another possibility is somehow your save data got set to read only. Make sure that is not the case.

Yet another and more tragic possibility is that for some reason it decided to use it's back up save. It would probably only do this if your main file was corrupted.

If you can't find a solution, make a back up of your save data and then try to do something and save again and see if it does correctly save this time.

Thanks for the tips. I will look into it. But I am not sure if I am limited in anyway for troubleshooting as I am playing at a cybercafe rather than my own personal computer.

1. Does this mean the save file supposed to be located in "SAVEDATA1000"?

2. If I lost internet connection and it was saved to local, how do I transfer my latest save to cloud? As I mentioned above I am playing across different PC so my cloud save should always be latest

3. How to know if my save data is read-only? From the folder of the game in the pc? If it is set to read-only, is there anyway to prevent similar thing happening?

4. I can understand if it uses backup save upon determining my existing file is corrupted but I experience the same thing twice. On Sunday night after pushing up yo MR4, I decided to confirm manual save and close the whole steam, only to login again to check my MR went back to MR1

5. Backing up save file seems to be one method. But how does the game differentiate between the cloud save file and my backed-up save file being the latest?

Sorry if I sound cranky. I am just a bit frustrated from the loss of almost 10hr game time
awanderingswordsman 13 ENE 2020 a las 6:06
No I understand. Anyway, the save file is called "SAVEDATA1000". It's not a folder but a file. Considering you aren't playing on the same computer every time, that could maybe cause issues I'm unfamiliar with. I THINK I can guess what happened though.

By default the game save is in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[your steam ID]\582010\remote. The \remote part is where the cloud save is stored. There is also \582010\local. That's where a non cloud save would be located presumably but normally it's empty cause the save will be in \remote if cloud saves are enabled (which they are by default). If there is a SAVEDATA1000 file here or in local, thats when you'd need to check if it's read only (by right clicking, and checking properties).

The game itself has a back up save folder that you can get to by going to steam, right clicking on MHW in your library, clicking manage, then clicking browse local files (or clicking properties and finding browse local files there). The folder you find here called "savedata_backup" will also have a SAVEDATA1000 file which is a copy of your save data when you loaded up the game. I'm not sure if it ever uses this file or if it's just there for you to manually use if you somehow corrupt your save by exiting mid save. That way you'd only lose your current sessions progress instead of the whole save file.

What probably happened is, somehow the sync saves option was disabled. In steam, right click MHW, click properties, click the updates tab, and at the bottom is a checkbox for syncing cloud saves. You need this to be checked (it is by default but perhaps some global setting can override it).

If this is correct, the original computer you played it on probably has that MR4 save file. If it does you can check the box to sync cloud saves, then load up the game, save it again, and you should be fine.

If none of these are the issue, then I probably don't know. I know more than some people about computer issues but I'm really not that knowledgeable.
