Use the Plunderblade/mining and keep Returning from Quest to collect early MR armor materials if you find it a bit too hard. The defense value of even the basic MR armor is crazy compared to HR.
Armor is less of a priority, at least at the start as skills matter. I used Draken up until Velkhana as I wasn't getting one shot yet. Upgrade if you're carting every fight as MR armor has a lot more defense.
Though it may not just be gear that is giving you a problem. MR monsters are a lot more aggressive, especially the new ones. I don't have enough info to say.
Also are you using the clutch claw?
Defender weapons have no MR counterpart, they're just for Low/High Rank and are thus outpaced by Iceborne's weapons. You also don't need purecrystals for R9 metal weapons if you upgrade them from their HR counterparts instead of forging them outright.
Anyway, MR works like the transition from LR to HR, so you want to be replacing your HR equipment ASAP once you find a replacement that suits you. You are now once again at the bottom of the food chain, so you'll have to accept getting your ass kicked early to some extent.
You'll be able to replace that HR armor with far superior MR equivalents, which you should do ASAP (hunt easy MR monsters like great jagras or kulu for more options in armorsets) and then you can get to working your way back to the top.
I never mentioned IB endgame, as i have clearly stated i have a hard time even starting it.
What you need, health regen?
If you could Solo Arch-Tempered elder dragons with 475 defense master rank will be a total joke for you probably until Very-Very-LATE on the expansion u will swap armors
475 def + buffer kitty + food + attack/def active buffs + attack/def passive buffs will put you on 575-600 defense having your favorite Offensive-Pro-Time attack-builds
Sadly the new armors only provide good defense but most of abilities are trash. Only "Noobs" will need 700 defense with mediocre abilities in order of defeat enemies on master rank. People since 1 year ago is soloing arch tempered elder dragons on time attack runs
I soloed the entire IB campaign in behemoth armor and wyvern ignition... Mostly because I had health augment and you can't replace master's touch until MR Teostra. Not having to pot or sharpen was a convenience I didn't want to part with...
It was roughly equivalent to making every MR encounter into tempered/arch-tempered and I actually regret doing this because I could have saved a lot of time if I had upgraded earlier. Shara Ishvalda in particular was a huge cart-fest since I couldn't really survive any of her attacks in HR gear. Took me way too long.
So no, I don't think HR equipment is useless in Iceborne, you can definitely still kill monsters. But you will make the game much more difficult and less forgiving. In the same way, it's entirely possible to defeat Xeno in LR gear too... But why?
