Try charging up a shot, then use dragonpiercer on something large like radobaan.

Bows are best for solo. It gets a little technical, and requires 5 points in constitution, Normal Shots, and Spread Shots to function properly.

If you want to just have a good ol' time fighting monsters, consider making Odogaron's light bowgun, "Karma", or make Nergal Fusillade in the heavy bowgun list.

A support weapon with bad damage, but god tier utility. Very bad for solo.

>HB
Can be high dpm ranged if you fill with reload & recoil upgrade, or full troll mode with 3 shields. Somewhat bad for solo.

>Bow
Medicore but consistent dpm, but don‘t expect them to do anything but damage. Somewhat fine for solo.

Light bowgun is fun imo. It's like third person shooting game. Which is a unique variation for your hunt.

Heavy bowgun tank build seems fun, where you have a shield on your gun and auto block stuff and tough to bring down. But need late game to reach there.

You gotta practice aiming in practice room tho. Once you can aim rather well as you move around with either mouse or keyboard, it becomes more fun.

For solo? Clusterbomb exploit meta ofc. But it gets boring and is not really fun. I advice you to use a bow with constitution 3.. 5 is overkill. Spread and normal up, Crit Element and weakness exploit. If the anja bow crits against vaal and kirin with maxed crit and fire attack.. it just destroys.. same with kadachi thunder against nerg and kush (later kulve thunder). But you need mighty bow for the additional charge for superb dps.

Dash> Charged Shot>Powershot <3

Lbgs are not so good except a few normal 2 rapid fire ones. Hbg most badass weapons aren't here yet.

Get some element bows and see monsters get wrecked (ofc only with 3 star weakness). With impact mantle you get a lot of ko's if you focus the head.

Somewhat agreed, with reservations. It has damage potential, but nowhere near as lethal as they used to be in previous games.

Are you joking? Nergigante's HBG shreds monsters and stunlocks them HARD when playing solo-- so well that most runs using it end in less than 4 minutes.

"Somewhat fine for solo"

Alright, say that to two minute solo Vaal Hazaak runs and 2 minute solo Diablos runs.

Mediocre? Not with the right build and aiming. I can't imagine running kush without maxed dmg thunder bow anymore or fire bow against kirin. Fastest clear times of all weapons.. at least for me.

I started out MHW using hammer cause it's what i moved to at the end of MH Tri, cause it ended fights so quickly with the massive damage and easy breaks.
Trash weapon to solo the Jyuratodos though cause that boi so damn thiccc.

Light bowgun (Jagras 1) was easy, run around in the mud and lure the thicc boi onto the wyvern fire ability for massive damage.
But Heavy Bowgun (Steel Assault 1) was just fun and easy to use. Your move speed drops like you've got a greatsword, but you get the machinegun mode which is epic as hell.

I felt like the terminator shooting the predator with a chain gun in that one movie. Just so extremely satisfying, I felt my inner apache attack chopper spirit animal roar in that moment.

Also; equip a shield attachment to get auto block when they come at you. It will only block the first hit of a wombo combo, but if they're doing something like a body check where you take damage multiple times before you hit the floor from their single long move, you auto pop off as many shots as you would have taken damage. It's like, reverse damage.
Makes the Jyuratodos a walk in the park even on High Rank. 10/10

Bow is the most "new ranged player" friendly possible, I personally use the Final Boss's bow. You basically want power coating (on a high end bow, preferably) and you're good to go, Final Boss's bow just happens to give very valuable slots. You will want skills that reduce stamina consumption because you will spam a specific move all the time (Aim + Dodge) and skills that boost critical hits/ afinity/ attack/ give an extra charge level/ boost normal and power shots. (Bow can also apply status depending on supported coatings, but it is not its main use, just a (very) nice addition)

LBG and HBG are on a whole another level and requires a good understanding of ammo and crafting (your loadouts will be an absolute mess so you can always craft ammo on the go). Of course you can always play status gunner but if you're looking for damage only, use the Karma LBG (Odogaron's tree) with Normal Shots Lvl 2 or the Magdaros HBG with Cluster Bombs 3&2&1 (Cluster Bombing is VERY strong, it's basically an easy mode). Just look at ammo compatibility if you want to play status gunner and you're good to go (LBG does that better than anything else). Other than traditional skills mentionned earlier (forget about stamina consumption and extra charge level though), you should also integrate Free Elem/ Ammo Up for a bigger clip size and hence more DPS.

But you have to familiarize yourself with the critical distance mechanic, your aiming circle will at a specific distance have a smaller second circle in it: it's where you're at critical distance and will do even more damage. This applies to Bow and LBG/HBG alike.

Bow takes the crown for solo play, imo. If you're not HR yet or can't craft any high end weapon, any power coating bow will do, really. Same for the build(s), unless you have the ressources don't go too crazy, especially if you don't stick with bow afterwards.

i like the heavy Bowgun (but put a shield on that thing)
for support i use the light Bowgun only because you can sheat that thing way quicker than the heavy one and yeah i could use the quick sheat skills and all that but why should i when i can pick wide range and support the team even more.

can't say anytthing about the bow, never used that thing.

personaly im a big fan of the light bow gun. ♥♥♥♥ loads of ammo, good speed and decent damage not to mention all the status effects you could ask for.

The answer to any question you could ever have is HBG.

HBG is the thinking hunter's ranged weapon.

- high damage
- makes large numbers fly out of monsters
- decreases monster's health value by a substantial amount
- shoots stuff real good
- dakkadakkadakkdakka

Vanessa is pretty spot on, and Ive never played HBG. Or you could do the no-thinking hunter's ranged variant and do the cheesy scum shield build with the HBG or the ridiculously faceroll "I'm going to get 3 breaks every time I use Dragon Piercer" build with the bow via crit draw, special ammo boost and pierce ammo.
For people saying the constitution is mandatory blah blah for bow, you can just carry Dash Juices religiously and not even think about needing to waste skill slots for that.
