Anyway, to actually answer the question, the Diablos Switch Axe is quite fun but requires a lot of Affinity to counteract the low base Affinity, it's what I personally use a lot of the time.
I would also like to state that if you want to switch weapontypes, often the Metal or Bone one is the best starter choice in absence of better materials. Metal/Bone weapons are generally quite solid and most importantly their materials are very easy to obtain.
I know the Diablos switchaxe has some of the highest raw, in fact I already have it, but the really low affinity really is annoying me cuz I can't really offset the negative affinity.
To get the damage dealer award you need to deal >75% of the monster's HP, whereas bombs, poison, blast etc. count towards the person that placed the bomb/triggered the status, and environmentals count as neutral.
Example: Behemoth has 35000 HP, boulders deal 10% of that, leaving him at 31500 HP. You'd need to deal more than 23625 damage to get the award.
Tripping isn't really something that'd change much going from CB to SA, but I understand that it's always annoying. However, the best medicine is just changing how one plays. Even Long Sword users can avoid tripping up other people as long as they and everyone else are in the right positions.
When it comes to the titles they're most often specific things. If Damage Dealer comes up that's a big thing because it means one player was contributing far more proportional DPS than they should be, which can be due to playstyle or build.
For example while using Charge Blade, if you were still figuring out stuff like maintaining shield/swordbuff, how to quickly build phials, and how to quickly and accurately land Super Amped Element Discharges, it's quite easy to fall behind.
But, most of the other titles you shouldn't sweat that much. It doesn't really matter who breaks what parts or so on. As long as you're still able to kill monsters and are having fun, you'll be improving!
As for the Diablos switchaxe, yeah, it is really difficult to offset the negative affinity. I personally use it with Teostra Gamma armor which is super lategame, and all those levels of Crit Eye and Weakness Exploit still don't give it that much affinity.
Anyway, I might as well answer the question more thoroughly after considering Switch Axes a bit more to recommend a few interesting ones that are easy to get, the Jagras and Barroth switch axes.
Jagras Raider provides Exhaust damage which can be used to KO monsters if you discharge into their heads and also exhausts monsters making it a really unique SA
And Barroth Grinder provides paralysis phials which is pretty nice.
Generally speaking, if you're the one paralysing or KOing the monster it's often difficult to feel like you're not pulling your weight in a team, even with lower DPS.
Then into DevilJho. Its the easiest to get and build for general use SA.
The "Best" two are from KT.
With Jagras you really want to be hitting the head to get the Extra KO damage as well but its great for a team anywhere.

Honestly I'd say most of your problems is not weapon related.
Either you guys need to start using level one Flinch Free( Brace Jewel) or just learn to position properly.

heres a bunch swaxe builds taken from this reddit link.

hopefully this should give you an idea on what to skills to get on your weapon as well as provide you with a reference on other weapons if you ever take an interest in them. if you can't make those yet, do not worry. just use the best ones you can make and craft those recommended ones when you unlock them.
