Elements are really only good on a handful of weapon types, and they're only good if the monster is weak against that element. You're not going to be doing much damage trying to deal fire damage against Anjanath or ice damage against Legiana.
Since elemental damage is a flat increase in the damage, this means that faster weapons get the most benefit from them. Weapons like Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, and Bow can thrive when using the right elements, but slower weapons like Hammer and Greatsword don't benefit as much, as are often outclassed by their raw-damage variants.
Generally speaking, like Suzaku said, elements are only good for faster weapons that can pull multiple hits in short time. aka elements are weak on, say, great sword and strong on dualblades.
Secondly, it depends on the weapon. There is no anwer to a question "are fire weapons bad". They are a bad choice if you want an all purpose weapon, better to focus on high raw then. Unless you're using Dual Blades. It's a loaded question, you need to be more specific.
The joke is on you if you're running around with a fire greatsword.
In theory this is correct, but in reality low elemental hit modifiers and the need for crit element makes raw better on everything except Bow and Dual Blades unless you have Kjarr weapons in which case SnS, Lance, IG and Charge Blade can also be used with elements against certain monsters.
^ This is the second time they've said something very weird.
Okay, so there's a few things:
-No elemental weapon is really that good for general use because elemental resistances vary between monster to monster. With few exceptions, raw damage weapons are best for general use, and in the cases of weapons that work great with elemental damage, it's best to pick the element for the monster a lot of the time.
-Elemental damage is ideal for fast-hitting weapons like Bow or Dual Blades, Gunlance is not really among them.
-On top of that, Gunlance's shelling damage is not affected by elemental values, so whenever you shoot you are getting no value out of the element on your weapon.
From my understanding, most Gunlance users choose their Gunlances first based on what shelling types/levels they provide and which one that user prefers, (Wide/Normal/Long) not based on things like what kind of elemental damage they deal.
the better you get at making your own builds the more leeway you have for quality of life skills while still having high dps and it keeps your friends from being able to troll you so easily.
