what is the point of having the huge weapon tree if only 2-3 is useful
If you want to use something because it looks cool, go ahead.
You're not forced to use only the best options.
Let's compare:
Kushala GS (great design like all Kush weapons) : 180 raw, a double slot and can hit white.
https://honeyhunterworld.com/mhwb/?19,119,120,107,107,107,65,health,0,0,90,0,0,32,32,0,90,90,5,16,16,0,30,30,0,32,0,0,3
(If you need Focus 2 Peak gets screwed)
Wyvern Ignition: 210 raw +21 from Elementless, natural white, -15% affinity, two single slots
https://honeyhunterworld.com/mhwb/?23,118,107,107,70,107,83,aff,health,0,5,30,0,14,30,0,90,0,0,26,90,0,5,30,5,90,0,0,2
On pole TCS lvl3 Kush GS hits for 709+14 ice, whereas WI hits for 824.
However there's a lot that are at least potentially better than Ruiner Nergigante's.
First, you need to understand that (at least according to my potentially bad calculations) R. Nergigante has 280 True Raw for the great sword. While it has a significant gap according to the bloat value that's around 30 more than the final upgrades in a lot of other trees.
Don't get me wrong, 30 is a significant difference, but it doesn't make the others unusable especially when they pack the advantage of being able to benefit more from Custom Upgrades and Augmentations. I believe fully stacking Attack increases on Custom Upgrades already closes around half of that difference.
Still a reasonable gap, but there's a LOT of things that can close it, such as:
-Paladire (Barioth) carries lower Attack but an astonishing 35% base Affinity which can save you a lot in the skills department, plus it carries more than double the elemental power of R. Nergi's Great Sword
-The final boss Great Sword carries the same raw, also has White Sharpness and can reach purple IIRC, has better deco slots and even better elemental damage, its only disadvantage I can see from glancing at it is the Sharpness value which barely matters for Great Sword
-I already mentioned Acid Shredder II but why not actually explain why it's so good, it can benefit from Custom Upgrades and is an R11 weapon despite being amazing, it can benefit from Non-Elemental Boost, it can reach Purple Sharpness and it packs a Level 4 deco slot
-The Rajang Great Sword packs higher raw anyway lol
That's just from a casual examination, there will be a few outliers like the Jagras GS from base World that can also compete when Augmentations are fully taken into account. Nergi has high raw, sure, but the main benefit of Nergi weapons is supposed to be the massive White sharpness, and Great Sword barely benefits from that due to how few hits it deals.
Use what you want, I will definitely use the Nergigante weapons simply because they're cool, but please don't talk out of your butt and claim that specific weapons are OP when you clearly don't know what you're talking about.
Also, I'd also like to note that this:
Is a VAST extaggeration. There are very few weapons in this game that aren't useful. Some are worse or better than others but losing ~12 true raw because you decided to use the lightning great sword will probably be absolutely unnoticeable to most players.
Oh, wait, I think I misunderstood the title! You meant BASEGAME weapons, aha, ahah, SERIOUSLY?
Wyvern Ignition is the meta basegame Great Sword, it hits white sharpness at base and has extremely high Raw. I also mentioned the Jagras Great Sword which actually gets bizarrely powerful with augmentations.
At its core it does not really matter which GS you use the damage differences are insignificant unles you are tryng to set world records. In the end its about the skill not the stats.
Just use whichever sword you think looks the coolest.
Unles you like use a fire elemntal one vs fire monsters it wont realy matter in the end.
It doesn't matter if you have to hit the monster an extra two times unless you are speedrunning.
