Going back to Berseria and Zestiria
So I took a long break from these games after not really liking them. In that time I've played a few Ys games and Trials of Mana which imo are all miles better.

Since these franchises are frequently compared to each other, I have to say that coming from this game to either of these tales games sucks 😕 and when I look at each Ys game I have played I've enjoyed them all more than most tales games (I did enjoy Graces F and Vesperia tho).

I think the first real jarring thing is that in ys games you can save whenever you want and there is a quick load. The combat is also much faster and the upgrades/crafting/quests systems just seem less messy

This is my first Ys game. Tales of Arise was my first and only Tales game so far.

So far I have to agree, I was really let down by the bad writing in Tales of Arise. Tropey writing can be good, however Tales of Arise just got a lot of things wrong on top of it. It's just a mess and left me with a bad taste after I finished it.

Combat was quite fun in Tales of Arise however yeah each time you run into an enemy it does screen transfer to a battle arena which is annoying (The lack of which is also refresing in Y)s. Skills can be excellent in Tales of Arise though especially since each character feels a lot different.

But yeah Ys8 just feels like a proper adventure. The fact that everyone is a survivor makes me feel like people belong. In other RPGs I wouldn't care about the merchant character or the blacksmith etc.. But yeah, how everything is connected in this game feels so good. Plus then there's the mystery that just adds to it.

Ys games are about the adventure and the experience playing the game. Everything is meant to feel fast paced and exciting from beginning to end. They're also designed with a ton of difficulty setting options so that players of all skill and patience levels can enjoy a challenge customized to their liking.

Tales games have a more hardcore focus on traditional RPG story telling which is fine. I don't believe Ys and Tales games can be accurately compared to each other.

i REALLY wanted to like the Tales of franchise, but i just can't deal with that combat

i have played tales of Phantasia(finished and really liked), Berseria and another one that i don't remember the name, but the combat always make me stop the game

I find the "Tales" games to be depressing while the Ys's tend to be more light hearted and fun.

Are you sure about this? Especially with this one?

Yeah I enjoy most tales games I just find it jarring going back to zestiria or beseria when you've binged a bunch of ys games where the combat is super fast

Tales of Arise is a garbage. I played many Tales of games and i'm not one of those people who scream "bad writing" right and left - but Arise is atrocious.
Try playing one of others Tales of on PC, they quite cheap when on sale. Because every other Tales of is better than ♥♥♥♥ that Arise is.

Yeah haha, I've seen tropey writing done well in other anime or jrpgs. Arise was just... pretty I suppose.

I have Vesperia on the list since I like the idea of Yuri. But probably be a while till I try it out :P. I take a break from my MMOs now and then to deep dive into RPGs, so next time I'll play that and Ys 9 :3.

I have to agree... I've finished Tales of Berseria but I can never had as much enjoyment as this game. The combat feels amazing and one could argue that this game has among the best combat mechanics in all of RPGs. Story-wise I would say that both Tales and Ys have good stories but overall I prefer this game over Tales.

I, on the contrary, like Tales of (and Arise is NOT a Tales of, so it's not included) more than two Ys games i played. But battle-wise - yep, Ys is way better.
That said, i really like Ys. Just a little less than Tales of.

Not sure how valuable that take is from someone that considers Zestiria one of the best Tales of games. Zestiria, which is one of the worst Tales games and a game with actual bad storytelling and writing.

You cant write a story without tropes. Do you know what tropes are?

From a quality point of view Ys VIII isnt as good as Tales of Arise.
That is also true for its writing.

When this comes from me, it actually means something. :ys_dana:

The fact that you judge people's tastes only shows your own inadequacy.
Everything else said after such blatant and childish words have no weight.

Any person in this sub forum would know that when I am talking about jrpg and/or anime tropes; it is only a handful of things and immediately apply that to the discussion.

Also if you think Arise has better writing.... Well good for you atleast lol.

Lol it's true. Everything has been done before so you can't ever be truly original. No matter what you write it'll have similarities to tropes. The idea isn't to try to invent something nobody has ever seen before, but to cleverly work your own unique creative spin to things.

I honestly cant understand people who says Arise is good. But if they enjoy it - good for them. My only concern that from now on all Tales of will be like this - empty, unfun, not interesting for me, which would be a dead of series for me. But we'll see.
Fun fact - many Arise's fans are agressive people, who want to say ♥♥♥♥ about people who dont like Arise, which sayd a lot.
