Manual saves?
Can I manually save (not quicksave, which is NOT the same thing as manually saving by hitting ESC and opening up a save menu) when and where I want?

I really shouldn't have to ask this because being able to save when and where I want was a staple of computer gaming going back to the early 1980s. I know, I was there, and had to make dedicated save diskettes, but I could still decide when and where I wanted to save.

But anyway... can I save when and I where I want, or am I forced to deal with lazy console checkpoint saves?

Depending from your difficulty setting.
You can save game anytime you want at Easy Normal and Hard, but on Supernova - save available only on your ship.
There is some tricks about that - every time you fast travel to you ship game created an auto save. So basically it allows you to do it anytime you want.
Or you can install save mod.

Yes. On Easy, Normal, and Hard you can create manual save points whenever you like in addition to quicksaves and autosave.

On Supernova you can only manual save when on your ship. Quicksaves are disabled and autosave on only activate between area transitions.

it's worth noting that the 'manual saves' made on your ship aren't manual saves, they are Autosaves. which can and will be saved over if you have another game going.

I wanted to check if something would work in Emerald Vale and had no luck finding an answer on google, so I quickly did a story character to test if it was possible and lost my main saves.

I think you f**ked up somehow.. Got lots of manual saves (not quicksaves) shared between 3 different characters and game haven't deleted a single one yet.
